"Journey to Babel" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: The Original Series Season 2

Comments

Another stong episode. At this point they were getting strong scripts, fleshing out the universe, and spending heavily on production. How many extras were in this one - right from the Honor Guard of redshirts to greet the ambassador to all the aliens and extra crew. You saw those dress uniforms before, Bunny! They wore them to welcome Khan in Space Seed. I like the stronger humor being introduced here, too. (You'll get more of that later. A lot more!) I always thought that McCoy's "last word" comment broke the fourth wall. Was DeForest Kelley always commenting on that so D.C. Fontana threw him a bone? And Bunny, as for your speculations about where the story is going - there is no need to keep score or feel bad if you are wrong. It just shows good writing if you get fooled, and it's fun for us viewers regardless.

John DiGiantomasso

How many color skins do they have!?

bunnytails

I don't eat lobster often, but I have had it!

bunnytails

Yeah, it was a really great episode! :D

bunnytails

It's okay :(

bunnytails

Yes, I am sorry. It sucks I knew the reveal but I hate it worse that the audience is also robbed of my reaction to that. :(

bunnytails

LOL, why you so suspicious of the pink skinned girl? (for the record, she's an Orion (One of the stars in the Starfleet Logo is Orion, and not all Orion females have green skin).

Carlos Stevens

sigh... people who give out spoilers are making Bunny cry. Don't Make Bunny cry!

Carlos Stevens

Um you might want to look in to the acting career of Jane Wyatt (Spock's Mother). Very very very famous actress.

Carlos Stevens

Green blood... Copper based blood. Have you ever ate a lobster... They also have copper based blood. Lobsters are very tasty; just sayin'.

Carlos Stevens

Yes, D. C. Fontana. This is one of her most most complex episodes in TOS.

Carlos Stevens

100% agree. Y'all just shut your mouths.

Carlos Stevens

Ah the first episode where Spock's Father showed up (expect not the first episode... Didn't he die in that episode with the Romuans???). heh same actor...different role.

Carlos Stevens

To you &$@! who haven’t figured out not to spoil the series for her…. Just start using your brains. Seriously, reaction channels are not THAT new. The simplest, most essential rule with these channels is to keep your freaking mouths closed about future episodes. Sorry, I had to go there. It’s infuriating how mindless some people are. It’s just blah, blah, blabbedy, blah, blah, spoiler, giggles, self-satisfaction, blah. Quiet. Just quiet. It’s not about you. Edit: in reality, it was spoiled on YouTube… I don’t think here.

Tom Occhipinti

Solid episode. So sorry about the spoilers. :|

I actually like the Tellurite costume. What makes you say those are eyes? Maybe they're nostrils that just look like eyes.

Great watching Journey To Babel with you. Also like your idea of the "dual-blood-donor" scenario you envisioned - that could've been cool and maybe in an alternate universe it was filmed that way ; ) This episode is a stand-out for many reasons (some mentioned in the great comments by the other members)... one of which is that it's an episode where TOS breaks the "4th wall" with McCoy directly addressing the audience with his "last word" bit, the fantastic portrayal of Spock's parents by Mark Lenard and Jane Wyatt and just the overall broadening of the universe with a who's who collection of new aliens populating a TOS version of the "Murder on the Orient Express". Always loved the hard-cut to the fight between Kirk and Thelev (no set-up needed!) and the short but memorable performance by Reggie Nalder as the very alien (pun intended) Shras and his "... those are the reasons for murder" lines. Great casting. Glad you liked it, Bunny : )

Skyman's Follies

You're awesome 😎 You ask a question about why the reference to Genesis in the name of the conference planet. I can only guess they wanted a classic title. Great lines about the butts, Nurse Chapel, and Kirk's move in the fight with the Orian. She's wearing a costume they made the shorter the better. You noticed how Kirk loses after that maneuver-great reacts. I notice much more from the episodes watching your reaction. "Miss"! Jane Wyatt was the ex-wife of Ronald Reagan. She played Amanda(?). Sarek seemed less logical and more crabby. He embarrassed Spock at the hangar then he tells Amanda that she must respect Spock because he's a Starfleet officer. Also he doesn't tell her important things like his health. Once he's back from surgery and on meds he's telling jokes and doing the Feng Shui thing with Amanda. "Where's his eyes!" Thanks for saying that. The Tellurite costume makes the Gorn outfit from Arena look not half-bad. Thank you for a great reacts.

First off Bunny, I'm sorry some of this got spoiled for you! Yes, that's Mark Lenard playing Sarek, and it's the same actor who you saw in Balance of Terror. He did a great job as Sarek and it helps make this episode so strong. I'm just really sorry that some people ruined the surprise of him being here and being Spock's father. This is one of my favorite episodes for me, for all the reasons you mentioned, and I'd place it in the top 5. It's got a great mix of personal stuff going on combined with a overarching plot that is affecting the ship and much beyond that, great acting and music, and is very fast paced. This was the first mention of a number of races. Andorians don't get much coverage in the Star Trek universe but they were a founding member of the Federation with the Humans and Vulcans in 2161. In case you missed it/forgot, Orion's are the same race that the 'green skin slave girl' from the pilot was from. A lot of people got screen time in this episode which also made me very happy about the coverage they got. I do have to wonder how that 'suicide' Orion attack craft was able to reach Warp 10. On one hand, that should be impossible by the rules that we know about Star Trek. On the other hand, not all those rules had been established yet, and warp speed is played rather 'loosey goosey' in the original show, with the writers really not sticking to it until later shows. Also, there are examples in our own word about airplanes reaching much higher then designed speeds at the cost of heavy damage or destroying themselves, so I guess that could have happened here as well.

Greg Polander

This kind of goes back to the first episode with Kirk where they're playing 3D chess and Spock says "The fact one of my ancestors married a human female... ". Do You mean Your FATHER Spock? That ancestor? Your IMMEDIATE ancestor? lol

Thane Greyhaven

Waiting for this one too. Out of all TOS, this is really my favorite episode. It ticks a lot of boxes for me, and I am unhappy that the reveal of Spock's family was spoiled, I was hoping for that surprise, so dammit.
