That's really interesting. I grew up in America -- specifically California -- and it was never like that for me, personally. In HS kids did sometimes hang out alone for clubs, but I think, even then a teacher was more often than not *in the room* even if they weren't engaging in what the kids were doing. I should have kept in mind that Japanese schools probably do function differently, too. I never would have considered that children are assigned a specific room that teachers pop in and out of throughout the day. That's actually really interesting, and it does speak to how something like this could happen. Now I'm curious if bullying in Japan schools really does ever get this bad.

Thanks Matt -- it was a little bit of everything, honestly. But things are gettin' better for the most part, and I'm glad to be back!

In regards to the issue of young Mikami lacking supervision and aid from teachers. When I was in school teachers would leave us unsupervised for 30-40 minutes on occasions so anecdotally there are times like that, though perhapes not enough for some of the stunts pulled here. However Mikami is Japanese and in Japanese schools class rooms don't belong to teachers they belong to classes of students. Meaning the teachers are the ones who rotate between classes to teach differnt subjects. Students are also responsible for a lot of the cleaning of the class room. I only know this from watching anime and other Japanese media and from Japanese youtubers so I can only speculate, but that does suggest student spend a significant amount of time unsupervised in the classroom. It's also my understanding that after school activities like clubs are also more prominent in Japan which might give students additional unsupervised or lightly supervised time in the school while school is not in session.
