Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [234]

When August heard Cynthia's question, he glanced at the [Mind Plate] floating beside Gardevoir. “That? ...It’s a cutting board! They say food sliced with it tastes especially good.”

“...Cutting board?”

For a moment, Cynthia’s mind stalled.

This ‘cutting board’ is what lets Gardevoir [Teleport] continuously?

August cleared his throat. “Ahem—kidding. Seriously though, it’s actually an item once carried by Arceus.”

“Arceus...” Cynthia echoed.

Strangely enough, she found the cutting board explanation more convincing.

Seeing her clearly skeptical, August just spread his hands.

He’d told the truth—if she didn’t believe it, that was her problem.

...

Since the match wasn’t over yet, Cynthia pushed her curiosity aside.

Round two began.

August kept Gardevoir out, while Cynthia released her second Pokémon...

A flash of white light, and—

A cream-colored Pokémon appeared, gracefully swaying its tail patterned with red and blue scales. Every inch of its posture radiated elegance.

“Milotic?” Gary, who had been moping over August’s win, suddenly perked up.

Blue and Sabrina were fully drawn in.

“She’s gorgeous!” Blue couldn’t help exclaiming.

With Gardevoir and Milotic standing on opposite sides of the field, the sheer visual charm of the moment made it easy to mistake this for a Pokémon Contest rather than a Champion-level battle.

But in that moment, Milotic’s eyes held only Gardevoir.

“Milo~!”

A melodious, resonant call rang out.

Waves of Fairy energy-laced sound rippled toward Gardevoir.

[Disarming Voice]

Gardevoir wasn’t about to back down—she countered with her own [Disarming Voice].

The two sonic waves collided midair and canceled each other out—neither side managed to break through.

Milotic didn’t seem discouraged. With a graceful twist of its body, it surged forward toward Gardevoir at an astonishing speed!

It looked like it just wanted to get close...

But beneath that beauty lurked danger.

Milotic’s red-and-blue patterned tail suddenly gleamed—then came whipping down with a shriek of slicing wind.

[Iron Tail]!”

Cynthia and Milotic had zeroed in on Gardevoir’s weakness to Steel and launched a precise, type-effective strike.

Whoosh!

A powerful gust tore through the air.

This time, Gardevoir didn’t dodge. She stepped in, not back—her eyes flashing blue.

The air warped as tangible psychic energy formed into a sphere, which she gently pushed forward—

—clashing directly with Milotic’s [Iron Tail].

[Psyshock]!”

Boom!

A shockwave erupted from the point of contact.

Gardevoir’s [Psyshock] and Milotic’s tail met midair in a thunderous collision!

Even from a distance, the spectators felt a suffocating wave of pressure crash over them.

“Incredible!” Gold’s eyes were wide.

Back in Ilex Forest, he’d only ever witnessed battle between already-wounded Trainers like Giovanni and Bruno. Seeing a direct clash between two fully powered Champion-tier Pokémon—it left him awestruck.

“Nothing special,” Gary muttered. “I’ll be at that level soon enough.”

...Though the way he stared, unblinking, said otherwise.

While Gold gawked and Gary tried to play it cool, Milotic—having clashed once—gathered a sphere of water in her mouth and fired it at Gardevoir.

[Water Pulse]

The vibrating water shot forward, with a chance to confuse.

“Gardevoir, [Light Screen]!”

Gardevoir swept her arm upward—summoning a transparent barrier that stopped the [Water Pulse] cold.

[Surf]!” Cynthia called without hesitation.

“Milo~!”

Milotic let out a long, clear cry—then unleashed a torrent of water from her mouth.

The swirling waters gathered around her body before she rode the surging wave straight at Gardevoir.

Crash—

The [Light Screen] shattered under the force of the wave. Milotic barely even slowed down, plowing straight toward Gardevoir’s position.

Despite facing an opponent nearly five times her size bearing down on her, Gardevoir’s expression remained calm.

Whoosh—

She used [Double Team], multiplying her image into countless illusions, throwing off Milotic’s sense of target.

Milotic quickly adjusted, spreading her wave wide to engulf every image.

Splash!

The wave crashed down, wiping out the duplicates one by one.

But even after the last illusion faded—Gardevoir’s real body remained unseen.

“Milotic, behind you!” Cynthia warned.

At her Trainer’s voice, Milotic didn’t even turn—she simply swept her tail back, forming a thin stream of water, and lashed behind her.

Smack!

A direct hit.

It landed.

Milotic had just relaxed—when Cynthia's voice rang out again: “Watch out!”

Before she could process it—

Crackle.

A sound of static electricity split the air behind her.

And then—Milotic felt a surge of electricity slam into her from behind. Her body instantly went rigid, stunned by the sudden shock.

Wait... wasn’t she fighting Gardevoir? Why is there an Electric move?!

Across the field, August’s smile deepened.

Why Electric?

Because Gardevoir learned it.

Back when August obtained the [Zap Plate], he had Gardevoir learn [Thunderbolt] to test its compatibility.

Although he’d since given the plate to a Mareep, and Gardevoir no longer had its power boost, even a normal [Thunderbolt] still worked wonders against Water-types like Milotic.

Suspended in the air by telekinesis, Gardevoir retracted her sparking arm.

Her eyes flared blue—[Psychic]—and she launched the mental assault toward Milotic.

But what neither she nor August expected was just how quickly Milotic recovered. In a flash, the water-type Pokémon swung her tail again.

A sphere of water enveloped Milotic’s body like armor.

Boom!

The [Psychic] slammed into the water shell, sending droplets spraying.

But the water absorbed much of the force—by the time the move reached Milotic’s body, the damage was minimal.

Milotic grimaced, enduring the mental pressure.

Then, inside the watery sphere, she finished charging her next attack.

A blast of water surged from her mouth—

[Hydro Pump]

This one came fast, and hard. Gardevoir had just finished attacking and couldn’t focus quickly enough to [Teleport] away.

With only a split second to react, she shifted her body sideways—

Splash!

The [Hydro Pump] grazed Gardevoir’s flank as it roared past.

“Garde—!”

She cried out in pain.

Even though she avoided the brunt, the powered-up [Hydro Pump] still left her seriously injured.

“Milotic, keep up the pressure!” Cynthia ordered, sweeping her hand forward.

Milotic, body ringed with spinning rings of water, charged again.

Her tail, laced with surging currents, whipped at Gardevoir—

[Aqua Tail]

"I can’t get hit!/Don't get hit!"
That thought struck Gardevoir and August simultaneously.

No hesitation. With August’s command, Gardevoir [Teleported] out of harm’s way.

Milotic’s attack missed—but Cynthia didn’t have her pursue.

First, because the [Aqua Ring] was steadily restoring Milotic’s HP.

Second, because after the earlier battle with Spiritomb, Cynthia had learned: don’t waste effort chasing Gardevoir.

Instead—

“Milotic, [Rain Dance]!”

Milotic’s body undulated as the humidity left behind by [Surf] rose into the sky. Moments later, rain began to fall across the battlefield.

Seeing the downpour begin, the spectators knew: Gardevoir was in trouble.

Gary, who had hoped to capture August losing but accidentally filmed his win instead, perked up again—this time, he definitely hit record.

As the cool rain fell, August’s expression didn’t tighten—it relaxed into a smile.

Now we’re talking.

He turned to the Gardevoir who had [Teleported] back to his side. “Gardevoir. Let’s show them what we’re really made of.”

“Garde—!”

She folded her arms across her chest. Her psychic energy resonated with the [Mind Plate] beside her.

An immense aura of mental power surged around her.

Though it wasn’t the [Pressure] ability, the force she radiated now was even heavier.

Cynthia’s face grew serious. August was about to make his final move.

And that was exactly what she wanted.

“Milotic!”

“Milo~!”

Milotic rose into the air on swirling water currents, matching Gardevoir in the sky. The two Pokémon faced off on opposite ends of the arena—a breathtaking scene.

August and Cynthia’s eyes met across the field.

“Gardevoir—[Psychic]!”

“Milotic—[Brine]!”

Both attacked at once.

[Psychic] bore down on Milotic from all directions. But the [Brine], focused and forceful, pushed through the onslaught and struck Gardevoir head-on.

Boom!

Both were hit—both fell from the sky.

Cynthia’s gaze sharpened.

Yes, both took damage—but Milotic had been recovering with [Aqua Ring] this whole time. Psychic alone shouldn’t have been enough to knock her out.

Gardevoir, on the other hand—had already taken hits from Spiritomb, was grazed by [Hydro Pump], and now took the full force of [Brine]...
