The animal mission is canon. The anime padded it out to stretch the content. If you go back and review a lot of stuff where they don't pad it with backstory, they add stuff to a bunch of fights in the anime that don't happen in the manga

I wish Kishimoto had actually had Naruto and Bee realize it was a fake out and decide, hey its a good idea...and they literally create and train a huge ass army of giant ninja animals and lead them into battle. It would have been classic...

Its never mentioned in the manga or the anime but though the Sharingan and the Rinnegan cannot see through things as powerfully as the Byakugan, they can see through some things. Tobi's mask is made from that stuff.
Also the Frog suits are a cultural reference to Japanese folklore. The three sannin are based on three characters from a Japanese folktale called Jiraiya the Toad. In it the virtuous Jiriaya the Toad Hermit, who practices toad magic and his one true love Tsunade the Slug Princess, who practices Slug magic fight the evil Orochimaru the Snake Magician. One of the things Jiraiya could do is literally turn into a Toad. That is shown seriously in his imperfect Sage mode, which is why Kishimoto never had Jiraiya return and perfect Sage mode, so he could turn into a Toad and in this more humourous back story bit (though I don't recall if the sequence was in the manga) he was shown dressing up as a Toad. If you have not gotten onto to the repetitive symbolism...Jiraiya = Yahiki=Naruto etc. In the three person characters sets the same patterns exist over and over again. Jiraiya is actually virtuous, but pretends to be an over the top pervert for 3 reasons. Externally Kishimoto does it as a sort of tribute to the folklore character. He makes a lot of the characters who have war torn and destroyed childhoods like Sarotobi, Jiraiya and Kakashi into "perverts" as their common jonin crazyness. Its another pointer. You will see Naruto once in a while doing the same in some of the humor bits too. Basically they lighten their dark relaity by staring at "boobies". The other 2 reasons for the portrayed super perviness is one as cover for Jiraiya as he has his intelligence network and 2 because he has had an enduring, unrequited, pure love for Tsunade. So he never could form a normal romantic love with anyone else, so he just dealt with his urges to keep his sanity via distracted sex.

yea no worries about not enjoying the first half of part 3. the type of villains you want or the plot u want just doesn't exists in the early middle of stardust crusader's until the egypt arc. While Enyaba looks like a serious villain she is not even in the top bracket of dios right hand men, she kinda is just the offensive team while dio prefers defence more anyway. She just feels that way because part 3 doesnt take itself more serious until it matters (late in the part) so you wont see any real villains while not in egypt (so she feels like a big deal because she is the only bigger villain shown). Most fans look back fondly at this part because of the journey and its conclusion so i hope you guys stick it out untill the end. the pain will ease in egypt (minus a few episodes lol).
