2025-03-23 16:51:39 +0000 UTCDunno if this was mentioned hundreds of ep's ago, but the whole snail as a phone thing is likely based off a harebrained scheme a frenchman and an american had in the 1850's to mate two snails together and use their supposed "telepathic link" in order to transmit messages across the atlantic. It didn't work, obviously, and the world wide undersea telegraph network laid by the brits for morse code use reigned supreme until a real wireless (and psychicsnail-less) means became viable 60yrs later or so. I'd read this odd factoid before I ever watched OP so Iol'd when I made the connection when the dendenmushi first appeared on screen.

The Movie/OVA is set during the events of MarineFord and something’s that happen after. So you can only watch that Movie after watching ep 523.

Black Den Den Mushi (different species): They do not grow as they age. They enjoy eavesdropping, but dislike communicating with their fellow snails. Commonly used as listening devices, or "wiretaps". Since being raised by humans gets them plenty of food, they don't mind being used and tamed. - Q: Odacchi I have a question!! I know that Den Den Mushi take on the same appearance as their owner but I want to know more about how they work. There are moments where they look like the person on the other side of the phone and there are even moments where they start off looking like their owner then change to look like the person that the owner is talking to! In Sabaody we see it again with Kizaru mixing up his transponder snail with the black one. So it's cool to see the countermeasure to that with the white one.
