PATRON EXCLUSIVE POLL!

Hey there folks!

Going to be filming a reaction JUST FOR YOU GUYS! Since I won't be messing with Studio Ghibli and their copyright strikes, this will just be posted as a watch along style video for Patreon.

Looking forward to seeing what wins!

Comments

Such a great universe Miyazaki has created over the years. I hope you see Princess mononoki and Howls Moving Castle too.

Peanutx777

I’m quite late on this conversation, but just a few words to say I find Porco Rosso so underrated. Quite a unique piece among a unique filmmaker’s work.

JML_fr

cannot wait for whatever wins, its gonna be great

Jacob Uscilowski

ALL of these are masterpieces. You should watch them all. The dubs are great on all of them (and I'm normally a STRICT Subs-only viewer) and especially genius on Kiki and Howl. Phil Hartmann and Billy Crystal transform their respective films in the most charming and unforgettable ways. Spirited Away and Mononoke are, IMO, just as good sub or dub.

Lionbarber

Will this only be available to the higher tiers or can any patron watch? I'm out of work on disability right now and money's kind of tight.

Richard Maurer

I've seen all of those and you're right, more people need to see the last three.

Richard Maurer

2nd this. Ghibli does get top tier voice actors for their movies. There's so much detail in a Ghibli movie, you don't want to be distracted by captions.

Robert Bonfante

Please do the dubbed movies 😭 don't get me wrong, the subbed are amazing. But my nostalgic heart is yearning for you to see the movies I grew up with 😭

Julia Burch

Please for the love of your soul watch all of them including Nausicaa of the valley of the wind. As a werewolf I love to tear into my food leaving a bloody mess behind. Almost every Studio Ghibli movie has moved me to tears of joy, soothed my anger and help me accept humanity as a good idea. No joke.

Garrick Smalley

I have all of the Ghibli movies on blu-ray. These are probably the top 4 most watched. Not a single one is a bad pick. I hope this becomes a common Patreon thing because I love talking about them.

Wild_Lee_Coyote

Please all of them!

kikoyito

And history lesson: The only reason fans DID force it down other newbies’ throats dates back thirty-five years to the days of VHS, when it was LITERALLY the only Ghibli on commercial US subs. Who cares if it wasn’t Miyazaki , we were that desperate. And, like hardcore fans shoving Akira and Neon Genesis Evangelion down poor unsuspecting newbies throats because”ya gotta start at the deep end!”, the cycle of abuse has been passed down, fan-father to fan-son. 😔

Eric Janssen

Anyone suggesting Grave of the Fireflies is a cruel, cruel person.

Paul G

Princess Mononoke was the first to play US theaters (if you don’t count a small under-the-radar dub of My Neighbor Totoro), but no one saw it until Spirited Away won the Oscar, and then rushed out to,see Howl’s Moving Castle. These are the “fans” who think only three Ghibli movies existed, until an older fan got them to,watch Kiki. Now, if we could only get them to watch Nausicaa, Castle of Cagliostro, and Porco Rosso.

Eric Janssen

Of all the Ghibli films I've watched, 3 of the 4 choices here are my favorite. Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Howl's Moving Castle.

Game Wizard001

I used to dream for times like this

Nathan Kholamian

Spirited away is the best intro into ghibili

Rey

Princess Mononoke is the best on the list but I’m a firm believer that the correct starting point with Studio Ghibli is Spirited Away

Ryan

I’ve gone for Kiki, only in the hope of sending some kind of message to do as many Gibli as possible and in release order 😃

Harry Reece

princess mononoke is the best ghibli film

addnid07

All so good!

Juliana Montenegro

Lol that's what I said. Start with the oldest and work to the boy and the heron. They are all amazing

Kraackin

Naussicaa valley of the wind, castle in the sky, ponyo, the cat came back also. Do them all and we will love you for it lol

Kraackin

Do all of them. Start with the oldest and go to the newest. Then you also see the life and work of hayao miyazaki. Who is the greatest anime artist ever.

Kraackin

This will be a good time to force myself to watch these gems

Walter Lopez

I have to agree with a lot of what I've been reading with you should react to all of these films. Especially if you're watching most of these for the first time. Another Ghibli film I suggest you react to is Whisper of the Heart.

Rhea Ellis

Ooh! Studio Ghibli! I've only watched a couple of these but quite liked them. I think Spirited Awah is going to win, but I voted for Kiki's delivery service. I hope you'll be able to get around to all of them. Spirited Away is definitely iconic but as others have said, it is a little hard to understand without all the context and I ended up connecting with Kiki more. :) Euther way, excited to watch whichever one wins with you!

Yani Dodge

I recommend watching all for Patreon only.

fanofactionflicks

Seeing Princess Mononoke and then Spirited Away changed my entire perception of what animated films, or films in general, could be. Utterly mesmerizing and important works of art.

Mike Hell

There is always "risk" when YT gets wind of this... I share Nat's concerns.

Mannygogou

Wow, Lupin the Third. I would have voted for that!

Mannygogou

I voted Princess Mononoke. It is more to my taste 😊 I like Nausicaa too. The others have a different flavor. They all have different settings, some in different worlds. Different themes too, maybe it's the themes that people actually gravitate to.

Mannygogou

Unpopular opinion, while all are great... Kiki's Delivery Service is the best intro for Studio Ghibli as it is the least crazy/trippy. Spirited Away is like an acid trip/fever dream and might not appeal to non-fans, while Kiki's has warmth and heart and won't scare anyone off. My vote is for Kiki's (as a starter).

Adam Doyle

There is no denying that Spirited Away is gorgeous to look at, but the deeper symbolisms and metaphors of the film are mostly lost on western audiences because they didn't grow up in the Japanese culture. That is the only reason i think it's slightly overrated. People enjoy the story and the visuals, but they don't really understand them. But all of these films are worth watching. My vote goes to Kiki's Delivery Service.

Opti_Frog

I disagree. As long as she watches the English dub, she'll be fine. I was obsessed with this movie as a child, and I admit, I wasn't a normal kid but trust me, she's an educated adult who watches content for a living. If this movie is too hard to understand I think we have other issues...

sleepless_dream

These are all fantastic choices. Spirited Away is the most “iconic” Ghibli movie now so it makes sense to start with it (Or Totoro, but I think Spirited Away is better for older audiences anyway). I hope we get to all of these eventually. I suspect a lot of votes that would go to Kiki otherwise are going to Spirited Away so don’t take that out of future polls please!

Jason Gillman

So I understand doing a poll, but I also think it would be a good idea to just start with the first movie Hayao Miyazaki directed (Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, 1979) and watch them in release order. Do one a month. This way you can see the evolution of his writing and direction style.

JediLounger

I voted for Spirited Away, I grew up loving that movie, still one of my all time favorites. My second choice is Howl's Moving Castle 🩷

sleepless_dream

I don't know any of these, so I will trust the rest of the fan base and write in Yoda, cause that's what I do when there is no one on a ticket I can consciously vote for.

Essero Eson

Not really interested so skipping voting on this one

Ian

I personally liked Princess Mononoke more but Spirited Away is a fine choice.

Rime Pendragon

This is a pretty tough poll. How could we pick between all 4? Definitely should watch all of them. The ones I saw in order were Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Kiki's.

Brian

Ditto

Erik Stevenson

Did you listen to the "Grave of the Fireflies" song from The Raven Age? Good music vid on YT and I love this song!

YannickWega

Not surprised that Spirited Away is winning and it's obviously great, but if this is a success I do hope you loop back around to Princess Mononoke and/or Howl's eventually.

Erik Stevenson

Great idea

Mastervodo

Oh, for future recommendations: My Neighbor Totoro and Graveyard of the Fireflies was released as a double feature. And I really think they both showcase the incredible range Anime can offer. One a fantastical story about the strength of children's imaginations, and the other a realistic bleak look into remorse and guilt. My daughter loves Totoro, and years ago I watched Graveyard of the Fireflies with my sister, who is still mad at me for showing that film..

Edward Rahardjo

Voted for Princess Mononoke because its my favorite. But these are all great. No losers here.

matthew h

Great movie, just no practical way to watch it in the US. I was only recently able to see it because a friend loaned me his DVD. Even then, I ended up having to download extra software to get it to play. After watching it I kind of understand why the US isn't too keen on it being easily accessible here.

matthew h

As long as you watch all of them I'm fine hahahaha, my heart belongs between so much Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle can't choose aaaaargh hahahaha

Calo Grsf

I’m also a huge fan of the Moving Castle books but the movie really works as a synthesis of Jones’ and Miyazaki’s different sensibilities. I didn’t enjoy it the first time because I was distracted by the differences but have come to love it. A lot of the anti-war messaging in the movie is present in Castle in the Air and you can tell Miyazaki had a deep appreciation of Jones’ work. (We won’t talk about Earwig)

Jacob King

Ah, the original savant Miyazaki. I absolutely adore all of these, and while Grave of the Fireflies may be my favourite Ghibli, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle still count themselves members of my favourite media of all time.

Maxwell Hunter

Yes! Finally! It's got to be Spirited Away, just because it demanded the attention of Western audiences and brought Japanese Anime to the 'mainstream'.

Edward Rahardjo

Howl's Moving Castle is amazing as well but I was always a little sad with how they changed the setting from the original book. The book was set in Wales, yet the film changed alot of cultural stuff to reflect a more continental Europe aesthetic, Howl was also Welsh in the novel. But regardless it's still an amazing film, Christian Bale also voices Howl in the English dub. Born in Wales but raised in London so he does not have a Welsh accent. Laputa: 'Castle in the Sky’ (1986) is one of my personal favourite as well, Miyazaki pulled heavily from Welsh Castles and Mining Villages after his visit to the UK and forming a love for the cultures, architecture, people, and spirit of the working class. Also funny enough the Howl' Moving Castle novel released in 1986 this very same year as Laputa.

LittleGalaxyBoy

Spirited Away isn't just among my top ten favorite anime, it's in my top ten for all media. Miyazaki is a masterly painter working with full command of his skill on this one.

Robert Bonfante

Happy Wednesday Nat. Haven't watched any of these movies, so will be excited to watch whatever wins. Great to see you finding a way for us to watch these movies with you here on your channel Nat. Have a great day 💛

Darryl Low

I knew beforehand that Spirited Away would win, but Kiki is an underappreciated masterpiece.

Morridini

Spirited away is a tough watch (tough to understand )for a first time Miyazaki film. I really think Kiki's is a great way to ease someone into this crazy person's films

Christopher Robles

Voting for Spirited Away, but also recommending Grave of the Fireflies. Definitely reaction worthy 😅 and one of my favorite Ghibli movies

XanderWhat

We appreciate you taking the time to do this despite the lack of YT$

adrianR31

Some of these movies don't follow a typical 3 act structure. So when the credits roll a lot of people are left a little unsatisfied. You learn to appreciate these in a different way. How long the scenes linger, how detailed the backgrounds are, the music (by Joe Hisaishi. We are not worthy). Miyazaki another important name to remember being all of this came from his mind. Oh and you need to add My Neighbor Totoro to the next Ghibli poll.

adrianR31

so glad you’re finally doing these! hopefully patreon exclusives will let you explore more content without having to worry about copyright

Darren P

Howls is my favorite animated movie bar none I know spirited away is gonna win but you should still watch howls moving castle

justajester

Has to be Spirited Away, but Howl's Moving Castle is a close second.

Richard Maurer

Spirited Away was Japan's number 1 movie for 20+ years. Only recently dethroned by Demon Slayer Mugen Train (within 2 months if release). Typically I'd say to watch these in their original Japanese, but the English dubs for some of these are MAGICAL (looking at Christian Bale as Howl in Howl's Moving Castle). I'd say all 4 of these are really important films and if everyone grew up watching them we'd live in a better world.

adrianR31

Spirited Away will always be my favourite! I'm expecting the Patreon to see a huge growth in subscribers - You should probably announce this one in a YT community post
