Original Movie: Speed

Comments

Yes, pease watch the Fast and Furious movies if you can, I for one love them and would be happily watching along!

Darchangel

Fun fact, according to Graham Yost, the credited writer for this movie, Joss Whedon rewrote almost all the dialogue. Like everything except for “Pop quiz, hot shot”

XanderWhat

This is the epitome of fun 90s action movie. Parts drama, parts comedy, great lines, fun side characters, fun action sequences and the best fucking soundtrack this side of a lethal weapon saxophone. Also, this movie might be the first "loop the video" movie.

Eric Wallace

Constantly insulting the poll winning movie is certainly a choice

Tay Schumaker

Why would we be watching the intro twice?

Tay Schumaker

Ironically, I think they probably did over $3.7 million in property damage by the time it was all over, would've been cheaper to give the guy the money, and Uncle Joey from Full House would still be alive.

Troy B.

I think she thought Dennis Hopper was the Jeff Daniels character, who she was confusing with Dave Coulier. =D

Troy B.

I think the guy would say "Would that be you Jack?" even as he glances over at the screen, because he enjoys monologuing.

Troy B.

One of my favorite 90's movies, the main theme has kept popping into my head over the many years since i've watched it the first time.

HeyItsSuper

Fast and furious marathon would be amazing xd

Jock

I am surprised this has barely come up in these comments, but the answer to “who wrote this” is actually Joss Whedon. He did a top to bottom rewrite of the script, writing pretty much all the dialogue and reinventing several of the characters, but since the plot beats didn’t change he went uncredited. All of this is from memory so I’m a bit fuzzy on the details but it should be easy to look into more if you’re interested. As for a fast and furious marathon for shits and giggles, I would love to see that, but I would hope you get at least half way through because some of the middle chapters (5-7 in particular) are genuinely great action films, and the overarching mythology can be a lot of fun.

Razor Bikini

Are you reacting to Loki season 2 sometime in the future?

Joovain

MUCH, MUCH better than Skyfall

Danishprince

I think many reactors, when watching any movie, make the mistake of making a few jokes that occurred to them while watching some early scenes. Once they start doing that, I think they then start looking for additional opportunities to make jokes and be entertaining for their audience. The result is that any dramatic or emotional moments of the movie get muted, because now their mindset has shifted to "this is a comedy". Obviously "Speed" wasn't intended to be high concept drama, and it did have a few funny bits, but they were meant to mildly amusing to break some of the tension, not burst out loud laughing to completely drain the tension away. Oh well.

Wally Hartshorn

The wildest part for me was Natalie thinking Jeff Fucking Daniels was in Full House....

Keith Jacobsen

The consensus on this movie is definitely that it is a fun good time. I think the “freeway isn’t built” scene is important for establishing the audiences buy-in. If you watch that and get annoyed or start thinking about physics then this movie is not for you. The deal with all the people on the bus is this was written as a 70s style social drama about average people in a life or death situation but then they realised they had Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves so they reworked it into an action movie. The people on the bus are in a totally different genre to everyone else. They all have character arcs and conversations that just got cut. Of course they blew up that plane it’s the 90s. I would recommend watching Pleasantville and Blue Velvet (a weirdly complementary double feature) to learn more about Jeff Daniels and Dennis Hopper and if you want more young Sandy I’d skip Speed 2 and go straight to The Net.

Jacob King

so disappointing!! i thought furiosa was incredible from start to finish. sad to hear how other ppl let movie receptions ward them off from watching things so easily

alejandro

Hi Nat, Add Furiosa to your Driving Movie list, please and thank you. Nobody went to see it. :(

Walter Lopez

Constantine is another great Keanu flick.

Johnny

I'm halfway through the reaction. I think she thinks that Jeff Daniels is Dennis Hopper. She just referred to Dennis Hopper as "that actor", so it probably isn't him 😆

Kevin Farrell

I love this movie. High stakes throughout the film. The dialogue is kind of cheesy but I wouldn’t describe this movie funny. There’s comedic moments for sure but overall a great film. One of my favs.

Javi

Dave Coulier in Speed would have been freaking hilarious. "Jack, you need to find the green wire and CUT. IT. OUT!"

Sam Kimpton

I had to finish the watch along to get this joke. haha. Bravo, good sir!

UngawdlyJish

This movie is pure 90s action cheese...and it's beautiful.

Steve Mercier

I hope you watch Mononoke hime for next ghibli studio film

addnid07

They don't make 'em like they used to.

Brian's Dog

Twister (the sequel/reboot is now in theaters) is the only other good Jan de Bont directed movie. I haven't seen it in a while but it also has some impressive practical effect. De Bont also did cinematography on some classic titles like Die Hard, Basic Instinct and Hunt for Red October.

Berry

send it bro

Chris

Nah, this movie is SO much better than Skyfall 🙂

Darryl Low

Read is "spot on", welcome to the 1990's =]

Taff Lewis

I think Nat would be pleasantly surprised watching the FF movies. 5, 6 and 7 were legitimately good movies.

Giancarlo Gasparin

I told y'all we should've watched Skyfall lol

Giancarlo Gasparin

Saw Twisters two nights ago. It’s fine if you’re not one of those people who cares about dialogue or plot. It definitely left me with a greater appreciation for de Bont and the way they made these things in the 90s.

Jacob King

And the train driver at the end was Richard Schiff of The West Wing 😊

Darryl Low

Yes

Jacob King

Was the tourist on the bus in Ferris Bueller's Day Off?

Baggie Mark

Did you know that You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette was written about Jeff Daniels?

Mike Adams

Loved the uncontrollable laughter near the end of the reaction. I also remember those scooter boards from gym class in elementary school 😄

Shaun Bloom

Natalie: "Who wrote this??!?" Believe it or not, the same writer of The Avengers.

K.N.

It’s definitely campy, but the action is still good. The jumping scene especially got a groan and a few “no effing way”s in the theater when we saw it.

mojo shivers

I knew you would love this one. A great summer action flick, plus young Keanu and Sandra

Adam Doyle

I'd defnitely be onboard for a Fast&Furious marathon, at least the first 5! After that they stopped being entertaining for me

Danishprince

It’s soooo much funnier. Holy shit.

djKENTO

You read jeff daniels. Thought it was dave coulier. But said Dennis hopper lol. Love that soo soo much.

Brian E

She was so much more confused lol

Brian E

I can't think who she could possibly be confusing him with.

Brian E

Man same lol. I was so confused. I haven't posted yet cuz I'm waiting until the end to see if she said anything.

Brian E

Love this film, but for a film named speed my god does it have the longest opening credits 😂😂 lol but it definitely picks up after that, fun Fact Sandra and Keanu both had a crush on each other (hence the great chemistry) while filming but neither one ever said anything for whatever reason I think maybe one of them was in a relationship but because of that they're still very good friends till this day

dieselbeast

I need to know who Nat thinks Dennis Hopper is…

djKENTO

Nope. 8th generation Californian.

djKENTO

Are you Dutch by any chance?

Pickupthepieces76

it holds up beautifully thanks to a lot of practical effects and beautiful preservation and restoration by Fox.

djKENTO

Jan de Bont is the goat. Literally an all time great. The man was mauled by a lion to get the right shot in the movie ROAR. Literally SCALPED by a fucking lion for the shot. Then he lenses The 4th Man for Verhoven, Cujo for Teague, Die Hard and Hunt for Red October... Flatliners which has an absolutely ELECTRIC camera... then Basic Instinct and Lethal Weapon 3, which isn't the best Lethal Weapon but is the best LOOKING Lethal Weapon by miles. Then the man starts directing and knocks out Speed and Twister but Speed 2 and the lack of control on The Haunting basically make him want to walk away from the game forever. Literally my favorite eye in cinema. Excited for your reaction to this.

djKENTO

So Speed 2 is not a good movie, but man you would laugh so much at it. If you have a friend who has never seen it, it would make a wild reaction, especially if you did a drinking game with it.

JediLounger

Oh man it's been years!! I'm so excited for this

Brian E

I haven't seen this film in a long time, it's 30 years old now so it will be interesting to see how it holds up.. or doesn't lol.

Baggie Mark

Happy Feature Friday Nat. Definitely been looking forward to watching this one with you since you talked about it on your livestream. Sounds like we are in fun ride today 😄😊 Damn, this was so much fun to watch with you today. I just loved watching you laughing your way through it Nat 😊 It's the 30th anniversary this year, so most definitely a 90's movie. I get why it's considered more a comedy today, but back when it was released it was deemed a more serious movie, but with funny dialogue throw in. But the bus jump has always been thought of as kind of ridiculous. The BTS of the jump is pretty interesting though. It was a de-commissioned cargo plane that was hit at the end, but it was still $80,000 up in smoke! The plot hole that is concealed for the audience to find out later, is when Keanu gets on the bus for the first time, the news reports that a police officer has boarded the bus, and the baddie says "Would that be you Jack?" Clearly he just has to look at the picture from his hidden camera to see 😄 There's also a moment when he's on the phone with Jack, and you hear him snapping his fingers - impossible if you don't have a thumb! But hey, I love this movie. I told you I saw it 5 times when it came out, and countless times when it hit VHS. It's a great movie for testing out your home sound system. There was just nothing else like it at the time. I also really love the kinetic score by Mark Mancina, and the way he uses the sounds of the bus, like the bell, in his rhythms. And of course this movie turned Sandra Bullock into a star, and she did While You Were Sleeping after this, a movie I would love to see your reaction to for the holiday season. It's a lot of fun as well. Thanks for an amazing Feature Friday today Nat. It was much needed. The Jeff Daniels debacle at the end was the cherry on the cake ha ha. Have a brilliant weekend 💛
