FIRST TIME WATCHING: Stargate (1994)

Happy Feature Friday!

What a fun ride! This was not at all what I expected haha, but I had a great time. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts in the comments down below.

Thanks for your support here on Patreon. Until the next one, take care and stay golden :)

P.S. Apologies in advance. I watched this on Prime video and it's definitely programmed by AMC to have sporadic ad breaks/fades to black. This may impact your version staying perfectly in sync if you're watching it another way. I didn't realize this issue until I was already into filming.

Original Movie: Stargate (1994)

Comments

Anyone watching on Prime Video, the time on prime video appears to be about 9 seconds behind her timer

Dragonlady135

im so glad you enjoyed this as much as i did, i remember finding this movie in a bargain bin, begging my mum to let me get it, and absolutely LOVING it, so much so i got my parents to subscribe me to a magazine where every magazine came with 4 episodes of the show, and details about the show, over god knows how long i watched the series from start to finish and formed a love for it and Egyptian mythology, (its actually how i came about the name Tesh, but ill leave that there haha). the music is phenomenal i agree, and it is cartoonish but in the best way. I hope you do enjoy SG1 as much as i did, either way im super excited to see your reactions to it, i loved this movie but i LOVED! the series haha, thanks for your reaction as always, stay awesome!

Tesh

I hope you give SG1 a shot, truly one of the great scifi shows.

Michael Stanley

I hope you watch the shows. Stargate SG-1 is an all-time great sci-fi show and Atlantis is my comfort show. Reactors never watch them because they are very long compared to shows these days.

Cameron

Well crap. I only own the directors cut, which I didn't even know I had. Amazon Prime doesn't seem to have it listed any more. What the heck. And the only other versions online are with Commercials. Dang.

UngawdlyJish

Good to see you have so much fun with this movie! I really hope you will give the show a chance at some point in the future. In my opinion Stargate SG-1 is one of the most entertaining science fiction TV shows there is. But I can understand that it is quite the commitment for a reaction channel to make. Since I grew up watching TV shows that had 20+ episodes a season, it is still weird for me to see the new standard with 6-8 episodes. For me that is usually way too few to get me invested in the story or getting to know the characters well enough to care about them. I guess it is a positive thing for content creators because if it is a miss for the number of views on their channel and/or they end up not liking it, at least it is over fairly quickly. I hope you will continue to have fun with whatever is next on your list!

Thijs

I tried watching this with you, but the antenna on my portable BxW TV couldn't get a signal. That happens when you are a 61-year-old old fart like me.

SilentBobFather

Believe it or not this movie is foundational sci-fi. It didn't create the "Aliens built the pyramid" idea but it popularized it and created a genre of sci-fi that blends mythology and alien technology. And yes Milo from Atlantis is based on Dr. Jackson.

MightyHobo

"Oh no. We need his brain"

Jonah Jackson

Love the Stargate stuff vary interesting I Seen all of them and Love that you're watching this

Snacky Munchies

Glad to see how invested in the movie you got, good signs for sg1

First, I just have to say...Fuck. What the hell, man, like dude... Second, regarding watching the movie before the series, it does set up the show and they reference what happened in the movie, although there are some changes (mostly stuff to make it possible to have long term plots for the show). There is only two actors who played their role in both the movie and the series (Erick Avari, who played Kasuf, the leader of the people on the planet, and Alexis Cruz, who played Skaara, the kid who bonded with O'Neil). Third, if you are looking for a sci-fi show to watch, you should check out Farscape. Cult following? Definitely ('Scapers are rather passionate about the show). Interesting? The story-lines are definitely interesting and the writing is top notch. Different? Well, consider that it was co-produced by the Jim Henson Company, so the puppetry for aliens is top notch.

Chris Biebel

I'm so glad you gave Stargate a shot. It's a lot to watch, but I highly recommend Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis. There's still a lot of campy-ness to it, especially in the earlier seasons of SG-1, but there's so much for everyone to get behind. Action, mystery, history, science, a ton of good comedy, excellent characters, romance, political intrigue and even at times medical drama elements. You can feel the tone of it evolve over time as well and what it ends up being is a very well fleshed out scifi setting that rivals the other major league blockbusters in terms of scale.

Matt Rodgers

Most streaming sites tend to go with the theatrical cut unfortunately, hence the missing scenes. I think the Blu-ray version has the extended cut as standard. There's also an older DVD release that has both cuts.

Nicholas Sulikowski

David Arnold also did the score for Hot Fuzz, of the Cornetto Trilogy.

Nicholas Sulikowski

There's also an alternate Jackson to goes on to be Hawkman briefly. (Smallville)

Nicholas Sulikowski

Pretty crazy that Jackson goes on to become a murder-bot called Ultron.

Keith Jacobsen

I hate this site you used to watch this one... some of these movies have whole scenes cut out of it. I was 8 mins ahead halfway through this movie after it had cut 2 large scenes and a smaller one out.. Great reaction tho as usual Nat

Ben Curran

I look forward to seeing this movie for the first time in about thirty years, last time was when it came out on VHS(!), and my friend and I just riffed on it late at night like it was an MST3K episode. We had no way of knowing it would go on to spawn a storied and respected franchise/IP. =P (Also, for some reason I couldn't find it on Prime Video, only every other iteration of the series and movies. I ended up watching the extended version elsewhere, so it didn't line up neatly. Ah well.) Also, I totally heard 'b*tch', too.

Troy B.

Do you know how you could have made it better with the syncing problems? Could you provide us the dailies? ;)

Grigsy

btw @natalie, you "not being good at the youtube game" (i would call it: you dont try to game the algorithm) is the reason i am patreon sub. you feel much more authentic to me then many others. just my two cents

Gilbert

since this crosses my mind some times too, i have to add something to the: "if you get to 50 you probably half way done" i also always think about that magical 100 years old as a human lifetime. while in reality, .. its grimmer. average age is: Both sexes: 77.5 years, Males: 74.8 years, Females: 80.2 years. soooo, for me as a male that half-life point was actually with 38 ... fuck.

Gilbert

I didn't watch this on Prime but your constant description of what was happening on screen helped so much! Thank you Nat!

I"ve never seen the movie. As a kid, I'd secretly watch SG-SG1 late at night whilst spending the night at my grandma's (she had a tv in her guest bedroom). I loved the concept mainly because I always loved Ancient Egypt.

Grigsy

if you even did just the first season of SG1 i would be so happy.

Ashley

Wow, haven’t seen this movie in so long. Also enjoyed the Stargate series growing up. On another note, if you ever do decide to watch a longer series like GoT again, would love to see you react to Vikings or The Last Kingdom.

Steven Hok

I do really hope you give the show a shot. It takes a minuite to find its feet, but theres a reason its up there with the best of sci fi. Id agree its unlikely to bring in record numbers of viewers, but there arnt that many other creators that have given it a go (probably because of the number of seasons) and its got a pretty big fan base so you may see a "oh someones actually doing it" viewership bump.

Ben Ranson

34.5 out of 10?

Skyruff

Kurt Russel has two types of acting, his comedy face and his serious face. For another good serious face see Soldier (1998) and of course Escape from New York (1981) but i am very very sure you have already reacted to that must see classic already.

Skyruff

That cartoon feel you get is a function of Dean Devlin's style of writing/producing. I heavily suggest you try the Dean Devlin TV Movie "The Librarian: Quest for the Spear" and of course the follow-up two movies and TV series (42 episodes).

Skyruff

Thanks Natalie!

djKENTO

It's not the director's cut. I know that much. It's listed as 2 hrs 1 min on amazon prime (where I watched it).

Natalie Gold

I forgot how much fun this movie is. It's silly and campy, yes, but it's got a kickin' soundtrack and just early 90s Kurt Russell and James Spader made me very nostalgic. You know, cuz I'm 41 and old as death, apparently. :) Also, and this probably just me, but every time I see a younger James Spader I always think of his character in Secretary (2002), where he is the original Christian Grey in a much better acted, more interesting, and even just well-made film in comparison to 50 Shades, which was just a bad film. Wait I just realized as I typed that… his character’s name is Mr. Grey in Secretary and it’s Christian Grey in the 50 shades movies/books wtf did she steel his name, too?!

Mike Hell

That scene is from the director's cut. That version is 9 minutes longer. The original theatrical version always opened with the Giza scene.

Darryl Low

Isn't it even shorter than the original theatrical? I saw it in the cinema when it was first released and as I remember it opened with the pyramid arriving on earth and possessing the boy, which Natalie's doesn't seem to do. Though I might confuse my cinema viewing with first time watching one of the longer cuts...

Tarjei

Nice intro. I would say, based on the comments for your regulars who have been with you from the beginning, you might be surprised by your Subscriber Demographics =]

Taff Lewis

SG-1 Season 1 ends on a cliffhanger. More accurately, the season finale is part 1 in a 2 parter, so if you do decide to watch season 1, you should rope season 2 episode 1 in as part of that. S2E2 is more like the true episode 1 of a next season.

David Bresson

One thing to be aware of when analyzing older films and TV series is that they may have been the origin of the tropes you see in them.

David Bresson

Yeah. I turned 50 in August so... this was... fun. ;)

Jay Davis

I'm glad that you noticed the similarities to Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Shaun Bloom

So good, more please! I'm here for this stuff specifically -- a lot of the shows you watch I could take or leave, but stargate sg-1 would be a game changer.

Rek

"Hey...we're all gonna die....we all have our date with destiny....so LET'S get into Stargate!" -Nat, basically

Keith Jacobsen

Very very true. You need some commitment until you get to the good stuff.

Curaitis

The Stargate franchise is my favorite franchise. This movie is iconic. But the shows are SO much better. The early seasons of the first show can be really hard to get through though so I highly doubt the show would do good on the channel. Supposedly Amazon is working on a new stargate show but I fear Stargate has taken too long to return. It was the third biggest sci fi franchise for almost two decades!

Zakk Pierce

Haven't seen this since I was very small kid. All I remember was being scared by the sound of the helmets retracting 😂

PrayTellCaesar

Love this movie. Spader is somehow still an underrated actor.

Bryan Erickson

I love this movie, can't wait to watchbit with Nat..

Baggie Mark

Judging by the runtime it's the shortest, the orginal (theatrical) version. I own the Director's Cut on DVD and it doesn't seem to line up so that's going to be annoying...

Berry

which cut of the movie is this? There are 3.

djKENTO

57 is older...late 50s according to my lovely wife!

James Skelton

Big problem with network television series is they are a relic of their era where getting to a certain number of episodes was key for syndication (where they make all their money). Hence there are a lot of episodes and the quality is very variable. I love SG-1 but it takes time to really settle into its groove - season one has some pretty big stinkers and similar to TNG it really hits its peak around season 4. It's just too big a commitment for most YouTube reaction channels and I can't imagine it'd do great numbers there unfortunately.

Chris Cooper

I know its practically impossible to do cause if amount of Seasons and Episodes but the SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis are amazing. Anyway, take care Nat and thanks for all the years of entertainment. Edit Ok, have seen the intro and im happy.

Curaitis

Loved it then love it now!

James Skelton

Haven't seen this movie in years. Looking forward to rewatching it with you 😁

Shaun Bloom

I really wish you can watch the full series one day one of the best scifi franchises ever imo

ISeeTrees ofGreen

Happy Feature Friday Nat. Been looking forward all week to watching this movie with you 😊 This movie is so cool and epic. I always love that moment at the end when Kurt Russell salutes back to the kids. Seeing it on the big screen and the travelling through the stargate for the first time was mind-blowing and the sound was so amazing. I just love this score. David Arnold was initially brought in to write temporary music for the film but the filmmakers loved what he was doing so much that they asked him to write the score proper. He went on to write the score for the director's next movie Independence Day, which I really hope you watch on your channel some time. Like this movie, it is a lot of fun and I think you'll enjoy it a lot. David Arnold also wrote the scores for 5 Bond movies and the theme for the Sherlock tv show 😊 Thanks for your reaction today Nat, and for all your awesome work this week. Looking forward to the stream later on 💛
