FIRST TIME WATCHING: Alien: Romulus

Oh boy...here we go. This one was VIOLATING!

Hope you enjoy this action-packed horror before we dive into some musical comfort with Wicked tomorrow! I watched this on Hulu, for those who'd like to watch along with me.

Also, one quick disclaimer...I looked up absolutely NOTHING about this movie before sitting down to watch it. So I wrongfully assumed Ridley Scott directed this, when it was directed by Fede Álvarez. So you may hear some comments I make about Ridley, but just ignore that. I correct myself in the outro haha 😅. That's the price I pay for going in blind.

Thanks for your support here on Patreon. Until the next one, take care and stay golden :)

Watch Alien vs Predator, that was a good fun movie!

Harry Sartz

Couldn’t sync with the physical copy. Tried to go to the digital copy and the time on the screen is all wrong and still didn’t sync… Don’t get it.

djKENTO

Underwater is solid and the cast is mostly great, def worth watching.

Razor Bikini

It is hinted at in the film, and the director has confirmed it.

Razor Bikini

this movie was incredible imo. i thought that having the entire main cast be up & coming actors was an amazing choice. i loved the entire cast but isabela merced rlly killed this role, i hope she does more horror in the future. i cant wait to see her in the last of us s2 in just a couple months!

alejandro

haven't even started it yet just 10 seconds in made me laugh glad you left that in. was priceless .

Snacky Munchies

Great reaction Nat! Would love to see you react to Pitch Black or The Expanse for more sci-fi!

Steven Hok

Yes scared Natalie is the best Natalie. We have not seen you squirm since October lol

john Alexander

It was a bit fan service-y but a fun film overall. Certainly surpassed my expectations.

Dooly

Hm... fair enough. Maybe just my algorithm then.

Geoffrey Mason

At the 1:57:00 mark, to answer your question, the more humanoid looking creature is straight out of Alien: Resurrection (1997). I groaned because it felt so familiar to stuff that happens in that movie. BTW I saw Resurrection in the theaters when I was 12 so I have a soft spot for it. That movie is ICKY! Like it actually goes harder and grosser than Alien Romulus but it also has a lot more jokey one liners (It was written by Joss Whedon).

David Sumner

That depends on how viscous it is. If it's thicker than it might not separate into so many droplets.

David Sumner

I was surprised at how much of Resurrection was in this movie. That's generally considered one of the worst Alien movies although I do have a soft spot for it.

David Sumner

I think the direction is great, the screenplay needs to be better. How about make characters who are smart and professional. That's what the characters in Prometheus and Covenant SHOULD have been.

David Sumner

I feel like one of the big issues is that somebbody has it in their head that only one or two people can survive at the end and so they force characters to do stupid shit just so that they can die. Also, the ending creature was straight out of Alien: Resurrection.

David Sumner

It’s fine. I enjoyed the reaction more than the first time I watched it. A little bit too much going on with the crew and it could have been a perfect 90 minutes. I strongly recommend Underwater (2020) as the best non-Alien Alien movie.

Jacob King

I assume it could be released from in the ship but she had to use the manual release to lure it in to the cargo bay. Also you wouldn’t ever release the payload into space. It is totally over complicated though.

Jacob King

That’s not in the story at all.

Jacob King

The most disturbing part about this movie? The baby's father being her cousin lol.

Cameron Ferguson

all over the internet where? everywhere you look most people liked this movie

rayman

It's regrettable that everyone voted this movie up so highly. It was all over the internet that this one sucked.

Geoffrey Mason

I thought it was fine until the last 20 minutes. What a horrible ending.

Rime Pendragon

I didn’t particularly love this one, but I’ve been hoping you’d react to it because I wanted to give it another watch. Hoping you’ll also get around to the previous two Alien films, Prometheus and Covenant, which actually were directed by Ridley Scott, as I’m a much bigger fan of those (Covenant especially).

Razor Bikini

"You don't wanna hear about any of that..." She knows us so well

Casa

Surprised it won tbh. Very average out of the Alien series of movies. Onward and upward to better things!

Ben Curran

And all (10) Prometheus fans yelled: BLACK GOO!!!! 🎉 I actually do love this movie though. While Fede definitely has a different style to Ridley Scott, I think he fits in perfectly with the Alien franchise. The “Offspring” at the end is peak sci-fi, body horror monster design. This is what happens when you try to fuck with your DNA! The xenomorph is supposedly the “perfect organism” and it looks like THAT bitch, what did Rook think was going to happen? 😭 If you want to be able to breathe underwater, be prepared to grow gills and scaly skin smh Also, I think at the end Kay was actually lactating the black goo and the Offspring was “feeding”, not eating his mama 😅💀

Daniel McGuinness

"You'll have to pay me to walk through that." -Nat If her editor reads these comments, please cut to her going through the air shafts in Alien Isolation.

Boomcity

I enjoyed your reaction Nat. You had fun and gave a balanced critique at the end. Alien 4 has a very similar ending to this movie, that's all I'll say. And I was amazed to discover that the big, tall and creepy creature at the end was in fact a Romanian college basketball player called Robert Bobroczkyi in a suit. He's 7ft 7in tall. They just animated his tail 😮

Darryl Low

Yeah, I think the thing with Kay is she was feeling a miscarriage happen (remember all her body went through leading up that point), so that's the main motivator for why she risked it all to inject herself. She probably figured that, even though people were arguing about what the 'goo' did, it gave her and her baby a better chance at life than miscarrying in that elevator (which, in fairness, that baby did thrive for a bit lol). A lot more is explained in the two Alien movies that came out right before this one (Prometheus and Covenant), which goes into the Synthetics and also what the 'Black Goo' is. I really like how those movies analysed the mindset and repercussions of synthetic life, and drew parallels between the robots in the franchise and the Aliens. Some people didn't like those movies because they went into them with different expectations. I really appreciate them now. I think they're really worth watching to get a full idea of the lore that's going on behind the scenes. In my mind, robots like Ash, Bishop, Andy, etc, are humans' attempt at doing the same things that led to the Xenomorphs. I suggest giving those two movies a watch. They're a lot more well done than a lot of recent movies and they give a lot of context to how and why the events of all the Alien movies happen.

Sean Maher

Canon wise it's set between Alien and Aliens. But the story takes ideas from literally all of the Alien movies. Especially Prometheus and Alien Resurrection. Personally I liked this one more than Ridley Scott's recent entries in the franchise. And can we please talk about David Jonsson as Andy? He killed the role. Can't wait to see the sequel that already has been greenlit with Alvarez returning on the director's chair.

Boris Kopp

That opening.... I almost spit out my Diet Pepsi........

Mastervodo

I enjoyed watching this with you Nat, but I have one question... Why would the manual release levers be INSIDE the cargo bay? How does that work lol...

Baggie Mark

Oh man...Nat's face when the adult alien baby finally shows up, I was ROLLING. It is truly grotesque. 🤣🤣

Keith Jacobsen

While this was watchable, I did find the scene where she turns off the gravity annoying. In zero G's, the acid blood would have continued to spread out across the room as there was no gravity to pull it to the floor. It would have formed into droplets or blobs and hit every surface in the room. Her actions should have made the situation much worse.

Essero Eson

Hi Nat, did you know that a series is said to be coming out this year as well... Alen: Earth.... think it should be good 👍 can't wait to vote for it in the poll when you put it in lol... As always thanks for all the great content .

Baggie Mark

Good suspense/thriller/horror movie. Terrible installment to Alien franchise.

Bryan Erickson

I can definitely understand that sentiment!

Natalie Gold

Haven't seen this since watching it in theatres. I've heard the one scene was fixed for the home video release.

Shaun Bloom

Really really loved this movie. Can't wait to get home tonight and watch it along with you.

Boomcity

omg Natmare season began early this year! i love that this movie expanded alien lore a little bit and you can see Ripley's little ship ejecting from the Romulus at the End, thus Alien 2 or ALIENS movies can continue

Jazz

Happy Thursday Nat. I wasn't a big fan of this movie. It's only out of sheer, morbid curiosity that I am going to watch it again to see your reaction to it 😄 To me it felt like a fanboy filmmaker had been given access to the Alien movie archives, he grabbed all his favourite scenes from all the movies and loosely stitched them together into some sort of a plot. It was just devoid of any originality. And the re-use of characters' lines of dialogue from previous movies was just ridiculous and beyond cringe at times. That's my two cents anyway ha ha Time to see what you thought of it 😅
