I do find it interesting that you talked about getting even more out of it if you watch it a second time. I just remember when I watched it in the movie theater when it first came out, I was: “damn, that is possibly the best movie I’ve ever seen, right up there with Lawrence of Arabia…but I don’t know if I could ever watch it again as it totally wrecked me emotionally”

2025-02-26 02:12:09 +0000 UTCThis story is a bit heartbreaking. It's a bit odd that you know nothing about this movie. I honestly don't remember watching this for the first time all that well. I just know that I really enjoy this one! I'm very happy that you're watching this! :) lol, you're understand the situation here in a minute. Buzzkill is putting it LIGHTLY. hahahaha, it's just starting. You will hate him with all that you have here soon. lmao, quite evil. Being sus of everybody isn't necessary. xD Ofelia is great, yeah. :) Watching this movie always makes me feel very happy! lol, yeah - that was to remove all doubt of it. Yup! Glad that you understand his evil nature now. hahahahahaha!! xD I love how freaked out you with he fairy! :) lol, this is a good one. :) <3 Watching this reminds me a lot of my mother. I miss her terribly whenever she comes to mind. The Faun's very nice, yes! It makes me so happy that you're enjoying this so much, Natalie! It really does. lol, yes, it's very clear that you're not a bug girl. :P I quit writing along at that point. A bit bummed that you chose to film the outro on another day. I honestly would've liked to see how emotional you were following the film. Each time I finish watching the movie I'm in tears. The way that you're rating the entire movie though - I'm on board with you! The film's incredible. Easily one of my top favorite foreign films of all time. II definitely enjoyed this more when I first watched this as a kid. It creeped me out big time but I loved it so much! Very happy that you watched and enjoyed this one! I knew that you'd like it. :)

2025-02-25 19:56:43 +0000 UTCIt’s hard to pick a “favorite” when a lot of it felt so dark and disturbing. I suppose my favorite was the ending and her getting to see her parents again while Mercedes hummed the lullaby

2025-02-24 22:16:12 +0000 UTCThank you. One of my favorite movies, perfectly directed. Though I fear wine bottles after it (the suddenness of the violence was so surprising.) I do think the Captain is so one dimensional evil as he was representing not just Franco, but basically the whole Spanish civil war. Again, just an amazing movie, both beautiful and brutal, yet magical and so sad. Gattaca next? :)

2025-02-22 07:26:32 +0000 UTC“He won’t even know your name” LOVE this movie! LOVE Guillermo Del Toro!! 😭 Horror icon, I loved his horror anthology series on Netflix 🥹 I think it’s definitely up to interpretation whether or not the magic was real, we get a hint that maybe she really did go through it by the tree coming back to life at the end after she’d killed the toad, so there’s room for a happy (well, happier) ending, not full escapism 😅

2025-02-22 03:59:24 +0000 UTC“You deserve it! It suits your personality!” Exactly!!! Guillermo Del Toro makes a habit of having his villains receive facial injuries in the third act to “reveal the true monster underneath” 😅

2025-02-21 22:03:43 +0000 UTCLooooooooooooooove this movie...I remember watching this in the theater. When Mercedes splits open Vidal's mouth with the knife I stood up and cheered. And then a bunch of people told me to shut the fuck up. Looooooooooooove this movie.

2025-02-21 21:31:43 +0000 UTCI watched this around the time it released so almost 20 years ago, and haven't seen it since, so I'll definitely try to make time to watch it with you this weekend :) As others have said, I hope you dig into some more GDT films in the future, he's quite the auteur.

2025-02-21 21:19:37 +0000 UTCDoug Jones, who plays the faun and the Pale Man in this movie, is a main character in Hellboy and Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. (Please Watch! It's more Guillermo! You will love it!) If you watch his performances in those movies, you will definitely see the similarities. Also - he played Billy Butcherson - the zombie boy in Hocus Pocus! Has over 180 acting credits. Great actor.

2025-02-21 18:47:03 +0000 UTCnah... don't pretend the sequel and the terrible anime don't exist... shame the people who made them without GDT. Shame them, rub their nose in their mistake and say "NO! THIS IS BAD!"

2025-02-21 18:14:28 +0000 UTCMitch McConnell did such a GREAT job playing the Pale Man at the ~1 hour mark! No makeup needed!

2025-02-21 18:12:06 +0000 UTCAlso Pacific Rim! Not everyone's cup of tea but IMO it's the best non-Godzilla Kaiju movie.

So happy you finally had the chance to watch it. I knew, you as a Movielover and someone with your expertise this would be right down your alley.

2025-02-21 17:06:51 +0000 UTCThat's a good description. Brutally beautiful. When I watched it the first time, I swore it was a real fairy tale that they just made a movie out of. Or, parts of fairy tales that they drew from. But, apparently, the whole thing was original. Did you get that feeling too Nat? What was your favorite scene, or the one that stood out most?
