Such a beautiful movie, and a beautiful reaction Nat. I think your introspection in your outro spoke to a lot of us 💛

I love this movie! I only recently watched it for the first time and as an artist, it's so beautiful. Sometimes, even when everything is ok, you feel sad, and it's ok. Life's not perfect but there's so much beauty if one looks for it :)

This is such a lovely, simple but straightforward movie, thank you for doing it. Like others have said, I end up seeing movies with you that I might not have otherwise were it not for your channel, so thank you for all that you do, and while I don't want you to have to a moment like Kiki did [which I won't spoil here], I do hope you succeed in finding the enjoyment again, and I hope you get to run the marathon.

And I love the soundtrack. Also, the original book is wonderful. When my baby is old enough I can't wait to read it to him.

When I was younger I thought Kiki was boring because it's not as dramatic as Spirited Away, Mononoke, Nausicaa, Howl, etc. Now it might be my favorite. So cozy and sincere. Kiki's understated courage and determination are charming and inspiring. And Phil Hartman as Jiji absolutely levels up the entire movie. In the Japanese Jiji is just sort of a high-pitched cartoon cat voice, but I love how exasperated and sardonic he is in Hartman's voice. I am a hardcore sub viewer when it comes to foreign animated film but this is one where I INSIST upon the dub.

I hope your trip goes well!

Miyazaki based a lot of the buildings on actual buildings he saw in Europe and this Kiki is absolutely set in a European style city. He was also inspired by a lot of western children’s literature and fairytales. I’ve heard a critic compare the Japanese imaginary of this idealised Europe as the inverse of the way many Western anime fans have an idealised imaginary Japan in their heads. I think Kiki does understand Jiji once she’s got her magic back. No one else ever understands him and he doesn’t usually speak when other people are around so her loss of understanding is less a metaphor for growing up and more about her losing contact with what makes her unique - normal for someone moving to a city for the first time. My sister’s black cat is named Kiki after the movie.

Your story at the end might as well have come out of my own mouth :') I too, am planning a backpacking trip to detox from the pessimism of the world. This movie was so refreshing to see in light of everything going on. Hope we all get our magic back soon :)

Such a wonderful movie. Only Yesterday is a perfect companion to Kiki's if you want to dwell a little longer on these themes

Being a reactor is on the easier side of the spectrum (it's not back breaking work) lets be honest, but regardless how hard or easy a job is people do get tired of it, I always wonder five - ten years from now will the reactors that I watch will still be doing this or have moved on

I watched a feature on how Ghibli portrays women and it made and excellent point. Ghibli women have agency and over come their problems through inner strength. They don’t rely on others or super powers, they rely on themselves. Kiki is much the same in that she must overcome her fears and frustrations on her own and because of that becomes a stronger woman.

This is my friend Katherine's favourite Studio Ghibli film. We went to see it a screening a local movie theatre not that long ago. This seems like a great pick just in time for International Women's Day, especially with so many strong and inspiring female characters 😁

Kiki's Delivery Service was my first Studio Ghibli film! This was the dub I watched but they since removed Jiji being able to communicate with Kiki at the end to honor the original film's intention. I still like to pretend that's what happened though.

Great reaction as always too. Boosted my Friday night watching this movie again

Also Natalie your job doesn't need to be percieved as 'hard' for you to experience burnout. Don't put your own experiences and feelings into a lower priority. Everyone has their limits and life in genral right now is turbulent, so do what you gotta do to get your spark back. Like Kiki did haha

This was one of my favorites growing up and haven’t seen it in years! So excited to revisit, thank you for this 🩷🩷
