Original Movie: The Nice Guys

Comments

Thanks for watching "The Nice Guys." I've been recommending it to the movie reactors I follow for over 2 years, but it rarely wins polls because "normies" have never seen or even heard of it. It was released in May 2016 and didn't stand a chance against "Captain America: Civil War" and two movies you'll never see movie reactions for. "The Nice Guys" is the BEST buddy cop movie in the past decade, and arguably better than "The Other Guys" (2010). Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling have brilliant odd-couple chemistry and perfect comedic timing. It was a clever contrast to portray Healy as the jaded, down-on-his-luck goon who sincerely wanted to be a real P.I. to help people, whereas Marsh was a legit P.I. living in explicable luxury (presumably his wife had money), but he was a sleazy alcoholic who conned is clients for as much money as possible. I appreciated that whenever Marsh did the wrong thing, he got himself hurt, and when he was being brave and selfless, he was nigh-invincible. Of course, you could call it plot armour, and argue that Marsh and Healy solved the case through happenstance and dumb luck, but I've read and watched a lot of true crime stories, and often investigations are tedious grinds that go nowhere (like Marsh said) until there's a lucky break. It's an ENTERTAINING crime-comedy movie! The daughter portrayed by Angourie Rice was phenomenal, and the perfect foil "sidekick" to her father's drunken bumbling P.I. sleazebag. I appreciate that Holly was the perfect balance as a modern female character: she was extraordinary, demonstrating determination, resourcefulness, quick-thinking, and bravery, but she had realistic limitations and endearing flaws as a do-gooder teenager, so she wasn't an insufferable girl-boss. She refused to be sidelined and justly called out her father's bad behavior when he needed the harsh truth to get him back on track. Modern Hollywood should use Holly as an exemplar, instead of inundating us with flawless "strong female characters" who walk on water, and are intolerably BORING. In addition to the stellar cast, clever writing, and sharp direction, the 1970s time period, neo-noir L.A. setting, and funky soundtrack made the movie a standout among buddy cop movies. All of it was before I was born but I felt nostalgia for all of it because modern movies are too safe and sanitized in comparison. "The Nice Guys" ranks alongside "The Big Lebowski" as one of the best crime-comedies ever. I genuinely appreciate Natalie watching it and am glad she enjoyed it.

I am behind on invincible and daredevil reactions and the red eye update was just a Wham! Now I have questions

Eric Wallace

Don't worry, you look bad ass

Joshua s. Jackson

RDJ should’ve won the Oscar for his performance as a corpse

Razor Bikini

Def a fun rewatch! Fun fact: even though we couldn't see clearly, the actor who played Sid Shattuck was Robert Downey Jr.

Alan Felicia

"People are stupid, but they're not that stupid." Oh, the charming naivete of the 70's, how I miss thee.

As much as I love that video, I think it works best with everything that led up to it. We should convince her to watch that show at some point...

Matt Bomer was great as Negative man in Doom Patrol, Check the video for the song " People like us - Doom Patrol " you will love it.

Mr BONDI

Absolutely love this film, really wish it got a 2nd. Crowe & Gosling are a great duo

Nick Freer

Seeing Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger together in this reminds me of L.A. Confidential. That’d be a great movie for a reaction someday.

Thomas Wetherell

You don't look disgusting Nat, I PREFER the battered-woman look. 🤣

Keith Jacobsen

I know it's a pipe dream (but then didn't really think we'd get The Nice Guys) but would love a Takeshi Kitano film reaction. Any would do, but Sonatine and Hana-Bi would be at the top, with Zatôichi a close third.

So happy we got a The Nice Guys reaction. Absolutely love this film, peak budy cop action, and a great excuse for a rewatch. For those interested check out Patrick Willems break down of the film on youtube, it's both informative and loads of fun.

Such a great movie. We actually did an analysis of The Nice Guys in my podcast last week (The Not So Geand Jury). I never get tired of the relationship between Holly and March. It's like Penny and Inspector Gadget: She's the brains, he's... not.

I'm glad you enjoyed Nat. I hope your eyes gets better. I went thru that too sometime ago. Take care.

+1 Alita!

If you love Matt Bomer you should get around to Doom Patrol a superhero dark comedy series starring him, Brendan Fraser and Alan Tudyk. It’s very different from a lot of the other superhero shows you would’ve seen.

Shane Black has this writing philosophy where he takes a normal movie situation and does the unexpected for comedic effect. Like you pointed out with the ankle gun set up. Or when the guys are in a gun fight and Ryan throws his gun to Russell, it's a scene we've seen a million times in movies before, but what if he missed the throw and it flew out the window? Instant comedy. I love this movie because it's full of stuff like that.

Perrin Rademacher

FYI: Yes, the original Hollywood sign was in really bad shape before it was replaced in 1978. Also, I love the RDJ cameo. :)

Michael Kemmet

The bloody eye looks kinda badass. Embrace it 😆

Kevin Farrell

Yes! This movie is so good!!!

Saturday Nat at the Movies 😊 Really looking forward to watching this one with you. I've been out this Ten-Pin bowling this afternoon and I came last, so I need something to cheer me up 😆😊 Had a blast watching this movie again Nat. You had so much fun watching it. When Ryan discovers the dead guy by the tree and is unable to catch his breath and shout for help always makes me laugh, and the timing of the shot where they dump the body over the fence onto the party table is just so good 😄 Thanks for an awesome reaction today Nat, and as always for all your videos this week. Enjoy your weekend 💛
