Dale, by pace you must be talking about the manga, which we already know from there that Gon can use nen, but he just has to start over.

lol while I had a similar conclusion, it wasn't because I preferred one over the other. I'd say it's not that Gon hasn't matured, but quite the opposite. Both of them realise that their relationship couldn't be as happy-go-luck as before because they're at different stages of life now.

@Monty Wrong, read his most recent interview. He said he wrote it to seem that way, that this is the end. But as he stated and I quote: "Hunter X Hunter as it is now has a lot in it that makes me want to keep on reading, even from my own perspective as a reader, and from my perspective as a writer, there are still many things in it left that I want to write, that I would enjoy writing". If he clearly lacked the direction he would've just ended it right there.

Well togashi wrote the chairman election in one go, and supposedly outlined it in 2 weeks. He had to do 'write' episode 148 if he wanted any sort of direction for the manga, and I think he said that 148 or chapter 339 is an end to the story for some people. He took 2 years off after that too and then another 2 years after 340, so he was clearly lacking direction with it

That's right! In that Whale Island episode Killua revealed he didn't really know what to do with his life, he didn't have a goal like Gon did. If I remember right, Gon asked Killua to come along with him till he figured it all out. Now that Killua has found his own purpose, they can part ways to reach their own goals. I've forgotten about that

I knew the tears would come. Gon and Killua are everything!!! I say yes do watch the 1999 version on your own. You'll see the subtle differences between the two series. But the story was cut short. Wasn't sure because at the time the manga wasn't that far along to begin with... but yeah some things are the same, some things have changed. I still personally prefer the 2011 version, but the 1999 version in some ways is more uncensored

I would recommend checking out the 1999 version, it has gorgeous art and and a very unique atmosphere to it.

The last episode is basically the epilogue, the revelation of how enormous the HunterxHunter world truly is, and a hint of what the rest of the Manga is gonna be about.

The older show has about 10 extra episodes worth of filler in the hunter exam arc including an extra test that takes place after maze tower. The 1999 version ends on episode 62 when Zeno & Silva fight Chrollo. This is episode 52 in the 2011 version. There are 3 OVA series after that total another 30 episodes. This plays through the rest of the Phantom Troupe arc and till the end of Greed Island. So in the end the remake did in 75 episodes what he original did in 92.

This is also a nice throwback to whale island when killua envied gon for "having an aim, a purpose in life"
Both Gon and Killua reached their goals they set at that evening

I honestly think its the opposite of what they where saying, Killua didn't need Gon any more, he has Alluka now. I honestly their friendship has fractured a bit and changed, they both know it. Killua's changed and matured, Gon hasn't so much. Killua decides to move on from Gon. Maybe I'm biased because I'm a huge Killua fan but I always looked at them splitting apart at the end as Killua finally leaving Gon behind and deciding that he was going to focus on himself and whats best for him and not Gon. And even though he said it in a jokey way, him saying Gon was second best now was the truth. Alluka now takes priority.

Probably unpopular opinion I've always looked at this episode as the last episode of the series, mainly because, I don't know, I suppose the next episode just REALLY bored me? Maybe because I'm more invested in Killua than Gon?
