I don't think Saitama being able to kill everything in one punch necessitates him doing so. Like, he chose to control his punch with Hammerhead to make his armor break and NOT kill him. I expect Saitama was just trying that route, lecturing this pirate lord denominator with the hopes of reforming him. In my head, he didn't expect Boros to continue his ego monologue and continue claiming himself to be so awesome because typically, everyone's running away scared by now.
