When I was in band, the 1st clarinet always provided the tuning note. I think that's pretty common.

2020-11-18 21:41:28 +0000 UTCI was in band since Grade 3. The big basses had the kids standing on chairs to get up high enough to play them properly. Also, it is odd they used a clarinet to lead the tuning. Clarinets are the easier to adjust the tuning (you can change the tone of a clarinet almost a full semi-tone (The difference between a B and B flat) by adjusting your posture) , and more subject to environmental conditions, so they are less consistent. You usually pick an instrument that is hard to adjust the tuning of (say, a piano or one of the stringed instruments) to play the tuning note.
