Interesting insight where you say the "VN adaptation syndrome" is probably what's gonna keep you from fully being invested in this arc, but I would say it's that very same syndrome that can be attributed to why you say that the comedy works so well and just manages to avoid being jarring; almost always the comedy is in its own self-contained skit, while the drama is more "standard" and flows more naturally.
