I even tried to find the source of this "belief", but I only found Tolkien's words that elves don't have excess hair on their bodies. A beard, hair on their chest, legs and arms, thus distinguishing elves from other races. But he clearly didn't mean pubic hair with these words. lol. Pubic hair is a sign of sexual maturity and there are very specific reasons for it to exist.
