New Video! Is Black Panther Alt-Right?

Some comic book nonsense! Hurrah!

Spoilers: it turns out black panther is not alt-right. Also spoilers for the movie, I guess.

This was a curiouscat response that I turned into a video script when I hit the character limit on there. Next up is Charlottesville, which has been hell to work on but is turning out really well. Expect it relatively soon

Thanks folks!

New Video! Is Black Panther Alt-Right?

What real world liberation movements do kilmongers ideals stand for? Black lives matter? That's spurious af. BLM aren't trying to arm pressed citizens to lead an uprising, theyre just protesting that so many black people get shot. So is it his general, "there's 2 billion people looks like us whose lives are a lot harder" sentiment? Black panther and his ex share that sentiment. And there's nothing incremental about the reform T'Challa makes at the end of the film. It's tectonic. I think you're searching for problems friend.

Hello, senpai, do you mind this shameless solicitation for you to notice me?

Aw, I thought this episode was going to be about how Killmonger did nothing wrong. :P But honestly as much as I liked movie it does seem to me that Black Panther vs. Killmonger has a lot of the same hegemonic liberal themes as Prof. X vs. Magneto. The villain's ideals are meant to stand in for real world liberation movements, and the filmmakers end up just making them do real nasty things so you know that those are the bad ideas. And the good old moderate liberal always saves the day in the end with a heroic display of incremental reform.

Ah! Apologies. Jen does the credits now so luckily I can blame her, but still, sorry, ha. I'll send her a note

lol "colleagues across the aisle". I see you are no stranger to the decorous arts, Shaun

Love your work, Shaun, but if I may, I think you might enjoy looking into comic books and comic book movies a little more deeply. You seem pretty dismissive of the whole affair and there's a lot of academic exploration into it that's worth looking reading and which I'm sure you'd find really engaging (I'm doing a PhD on post 9/11 American heroism in popular culture, so admittedly I've a bias). I take particular issue with your characterization of the genre as necessarily over simplified. The plot and conclusion of Captain America: Civil War, for instance, has nothing to do with who punches the best. I honestly don't think that film even takes a definitive stance on which main character was in the right (ideologically speaking, obviously Tony Stark was emotionally compromised). Anyway, thanks for the video!

Could you please put a warning in before you show us clips of Molyneux, Sargon and Watson please. Please Shaun.
