And that's the best case scenario, the worst being that he was jealous and petty of their romances with Buffy. Yet, he never held Anya accountable to her centuries of atrocities as a demon, something she had more free will in than either vampire.

He's a hypocrite and has shown more than once that he's a jealous arrogant person, who thinks there should be a rule for everyone but himself, his actions prove how two faces and hypocritical he is.

2021-06-12 03:42:12 +0000 UTCI'm reasonably sure that the reason they brought up the "Becoming" line at all was that it got a lot of discussion that was never intended. Like the events of "Seeing Red," I don't think it was ever intended to be a huge thing. (A thing, yes, but never anything that was meant as a defining moment of the character. So they brought it up and shrugged it off mostly in order to shrug it off.)

This was writer Drew Goddard's (who is now a big time big screen director and writer) first ever entry into showbiz. I don't know if he was a fan before or just researched really really well, but he really poured 6+ years of fan knowledge and discourse into this episode. The argument between Buffy and Xander echoed so many of the debates we had been thinking over for years. The humour was super memorable and on point too. It felt quintessential Buffy even though the show had never really done this exact formula of humour (e.g. the subtitles) before.
