Title: New Missions

“Did I know Tsunade could handle wood?” Kai repeats Hiruzen’s question in the Hokage’s office at about the same time another of his clone discusses things with Orochimaru. He stares at the serious old man, not knowing what is happening in Konoha—for instance, his wife’s handle changing from the cum-man to himself. So, he appeases the old Kage with an appropriate pun accompanied by a lewd smirk.

“Well, yeah. Tsunade knows how to handle wood. Sensei has a great Jutsu for it.”

The craziest thing is—Kai still isn’t lying, as he recalls her slime-like creation that gives a new meaning to handjobs.

Hiruzen stares at the youth before exhaling loudly, massaging his temples as he gestures to the youth to sit on a chair prepared in the front.

“I don’t expect you to share Senju Clan’s secrets. You are Tsunade’s Legacy Guardian, after all. But she mentioned she isn’t close to Lord First’s strength and awakened her Mokuton during her practice with Sage Mode.”

“Hmm,” Kai nods quietly, wondering about the point Hiruzen is trying to make.

“Lord First could capture all Tailed-Beasts with ease in his prime. As someone with enough encounters with Tailed-Beasts, do you think you can handle fully grown Jinchurikis?” Hiruzen poses calmly.

‘Ah. So this is what it’s about.’

Tsunade isn’t of any concern to Hiruzen. She can be the strongest Kunoichi in existence, and Hiruzen still won’t feel threatened by her because he raised her. However, other strong identities that keep things secret can rouse caution from the man.

Not Kai but Kushina.

Kushina told Kai how she resorted to her Kyubi Chakra Mode against the Dojutsu user who could control iron.

‘In hindsight, Jiraiya must have noticed it. Instead of penning it in his report, he revealed things to Hiruzen off the record.’

This question doesn’t fluster Kai in any way as he answers Hiruzen in the way someone of his known abilities will: “Fully grown Jinchurikis? It’s a hard question to answer. Tsunade told me about Su, Nanabi’s Jinchuriki. Or at least what she heard about him from Jiraiya-san and Orochimaru. Handling someone so tricky cannot be answered with a yes or no. But I also faced the so-called Perfect Jinchuriki Killer B and can say that I’m capable of assassinating him in many scenarios. But if it’s in their true forms, I learned a Jutsu from Tsunade that can help me slow them down. But I will need an impactful Jutsu to deal with them. On the other hand, sealing them is far simpler.”

Of course, the Jutsu he is referring to is the [Lightning Release: Body Pathway Derangement].

{A/N: Am I crazy, or did we never see this Jutsu after Tsunade used it on Kabuto, leaving her to be a tank using her seal?}

Hiruzen nods after hearing the comprehensive answer, leading him to question, “What about Kyubi?”

“Didn’t you ask me about this enough time already?” Kai rolls his eyes, choosing to put an end to the conversation in the best way he understands how. “Kyubi digs me, I hope. Or Konoha would have been in real trouble the first time Kushina and I slept together.”

Hiruzen blanks out before chuckling wryly, “I suppose that’s true.”

He changes the topic, unwilling to throw shade on Kai’s integrity after doing everything but publicly announce him as the successor to his defiled chair.

“Is your team ready for another mission?”

“To Uzu?” Kai perks up.

“No. I’ve reconsidered your request for your choice of team for that mission. Minato has asked for a short leave to refocus his efforts to grow a better Shinobi, and I’m willing to send Kushina, too. I’m in the middle of deciding about your third teammate. Until then, I want Team Kai to escort a few traders to the Capital of the Land of Fire.”

Kai blinks, realizing there is something else. “And?”

Hiruzen smiles, explaining the situation as two quests form in Kai’s view.

[B-Rank Quest: Escorting Sharks

Summary: Lead a path of a Merchant Caravan known for its aggressive business practices from Konoha to the Capital of Land of Fire—Honou City.

Reward: 14 SP

Failure: Konoha Loses the Businesses of Many Caravans.]

[War Effort Quest: Payday

Summary: Meet with the Fire Daimyo in Honou City to discuss the war funds according to the Hokage’s needs and financial leniency.

Reward: 25 SP; A New Title

Failure: Third Hoakge’s Disappointment; Fire Daimyo’s Distrust in your political abilities.]

As the last mission implies, this will be Kai’s break from his political career.

‘But a new Title?’ He contains his excitement—more than happy to accept the special quest as he leaves Hiruzen’s office soon after.

He needs SP now more than ever after binging through them during the raid to complete a few skills.

He quickly glances at his remaining reserve of SP, sighing softly.

[Skill Points: 1967]

“What a relief,” Yata smiles calmly, “I wonder if I should get injured every day. I miss having you around in the house, Mikoto.”

He lies on a bed quilt over his bedroom’s tatami floor, a bandage around his eyes as he chuckles while Mikoto helps him slightly with his tea.

“You shouldn’t be saying things like this. Kyo-san and I understand, but Sarachi hasn’t left his room after seeing you in this state.”

“You should take him out to hunt boars,” Yata smiles, sipping his tea as he questions. “Where’s Kyo?”

“She is out to purchase groceries. You need to eat a lot and get healthy.”

“Are you sure you should be spending your time here?” Yata sighs. “Mikoto, you’re a young woman who agreed to share a man. You must have his child as early as possible to keep your position—”

“Oh, don’t worry,” a calm voice interjects as Mikoto deadpans at both the men in the room. “We did it in your living room half an hour ago.”

Yata falls silent as Mikoto scoffs. “No, we didn’t! And don’t talk about those things in front of Dad!”

“He keeps talking about Grandchildren,” shrugs Kai. “I just like talking more about the process than the result.”

“I didn’t sense you,” Yata clears his throat. “How long have you been here?”

“A while,” Kai mutters, looking around the luxuriously elegant room and still finding his more homely and messy bedroom comfortable. “I asked Mikoto to say nothing. Your Mangekyo must have really messed with your senses.”

Yata grows silent as Kai continues, “It’s not just the risk of getting blind, right?”

Mikoto looks down at the small table. The soothing scent of the pot of tea barely makes her feel better as Yata starts to undo the bandages over his eyes.

“Dad, you shouldn’t—”

“It’s alright,” Yata smiles comfortably, taking off the cotton pads over his eyes to blink slowly. He stares at Kai and calmly nods, “Losing eyesight isn’t the worst to happen to a Mangekyo user. The first two users of this Dojutsu were Madara Uchiha and Izuna Uchiha. It is said while both the brothers faced the issue of losing light in their eyes using the repeated use of Mangekyo Sharingan, Izuna is the one who weakened further. A small record passed down by Izuna’s descendants reveals that Izuna’s senses dulled quite a bit, including his eyesight, making him sluggish compared to Madara Uchiha.”

Kai softly sights as Yata punctuates words he remembers reading on a tablet in the Uchiha Clan’s shrine.

“Mangekyo is not strength. It’s a weakness. Tobirama Senju developed amazing Jutsus without relying on Sharingan, but an Uchiha relying on a Mangekyo Sharingan will always weaken.”

“What Madara Uchiha special?” Kai questions, “He could fight Hashirama even after Konoha’s creation.”

“Madara’s younger believed him to be special.”

“How so?” Kai tilts his head, not digging into Yata’s ancestry to know all these things in the first place.

“Who knows why Madara wasn’t affected more adversely by his Mangekyo,” Yata shrugs. “That man was a beast in human’s clothing, after all.”

“And why didn’t he go blind?” Kai blinks.

Yata doesn’t answer readily anymore. Instead, he grows silent for a moment before looking at Mikoto. “That is a conversation I don’t wish to have with you. But,” he hesitates with a complex emotion in his eyes as he smiles knowingly in his daughter’s direction. “You felt like losing your edge the second you saw me, right?”

He turns to look at Kai, “That is why you are here, too. The little snake in your sleeve tells me you’re the real one.”

Cinnamon slithers back into Kai’s sleeves as Yata continues, “You’re worried by the unknown.”

“I’d be a pretty shitty guy if I didn’t worry for Mikoto,” Kai scoffs and looks at Mikoto.

“Do you want to tell him?”

Mikoto looks back hesitatingly and nods. She sighs and softly reveals, “When I saw you at the Hospital yesterday, I think I lost consciousness. But Kai says I returned home just fine. I don’t have any memories of returning from the Hospital and waking up in our bed today.”

Yata lowers his head, “I don’t know what to tell you, Mikoto. You shouldn’t even feel the least bit of sadness. Not only did I survive against the Third Raikage, but I also did that with the least injuries I can imagine.” He chuckles softly. “I feel I’ve disappointed you.”

“What?”

Mikoto slightly stirs as Kai interjects. “I’ll relax in Sarachi’s room. He must have some fun toys, right? I just stuck around because we didn’t get to hang out for a while. Yata-san is right, you know. Kushina will claw her way as a disaster in our group if we don’t stick together in the bedroom.”

Mikoto looks at Kai with a smile, “Sorry for being trouble. To both of you,” she looks at her father, too.

“Don’t worry. I know you take after your father/fiance.” Both of them speak simultaneously before staring at each other.

As Kai leaves, Mikoto stares at Yata before beginning.

“I felt the same way as I did the time I awoke my Sharingan. Of course, I don’t have a Mangekyo,” she shakes her head while clenching her fists. “But the feeling of helplessness when I saw you in such a horrible state-”

“I’m fine, Mikoto.”

“You exhausted your chakra reserves!” She snaps. “And those scars!” She looks at Yata’s right arm. “What the Third Raikage used on you wasn’t a normal elemental Jutsu. If it wasn’t for Kai assisting in the treatment, you would have taken months to heal instead of hours!”

Yata nods, looking at his wrapped arm.

The Black Lightning injured him when he protected Fugaku in the battle despite using Susano.

“It wasn’t a regular Jutsu,” Yata recalls. “But do you see now? You didn’t feel helpless in the rush of battle as you did after seeing my condition despite knowing I would survive.”

“Mikoto,” Yata states firmly, “I need you to stay strong!”

“You speak as if it’s easy,” Mikoto averts her gaze, looking at their family’s tapestry. “How would you feel if I almost got blind and tethered at the edge of death?”

Yata thins his lips while she shakes her head. “Sorry, that was unfair to say.”

“You are as stubborn as your mother.” Yata shakes his head with a wry expression.

“Did Mother have it, too?”

“No.” He replies, “We Uchihas are more receptive to emotional outbursts, but not everyone advances their Sharingan to another level or unlocks their Mangekyo Sharingan. The pain and helplessness one must feel to awaken the Mangekyo is a form of emotional torture. After all, the sight that triggers our Mangekyo will always appear to us whenever we close our eyes as that memory has become our driving force.”

Yata closes his eyes, taking a shuddering breath. “I can still see your mother lying in my arms.”

Mikoto takes a deep breath. Her nose slightly prickles as she grits her teeth.

“I can still hear her breathing turn shallow, her eyes losing their focus.”

Yata opens his eyes, his sharingan anxiously whirling and twisting together to form a three-pointed star with dots in between.

“I still remember the Team of Iwagakure’s ashes burning in my Amaterasu. That is pain, Mikoto. I recall that stale evening whenever I close my eyes—reminded of my helplessness and weakness.”

Mikoto smiles sadly.

“I empathize with your notion of not wanting to talk about my Mangekyo.”

“Father?”

“Yes, dear?”

“Is there no other way for a Uchiha to grow stronger?” Mikoto questions. “I understand we can develop Jutsus and use them without startling disadvantages and stringent conditions. But our Sharingan—is there no way to overcome this curse?”

“Madara did it in a way I will never wish for you, even if you awaken your Mangekyo Sharingan,” Yata smiles. “No wonder that man could not settle peacefully.”

“What do you mean?”

“Now, now. We discussed it, right? You get to read our Family Journal once you’re married, your mother’s letter when you’re a mother, and my letter when I die.”

Mikoto deadpans, “And I still don’t like those conditions. Why can’t you let me know things now?”

Yata smiles widely, opening his arms, “Come here.”

Although Mikoto pouts, she eagerly leans forward to hug her father as he whispers, “Mikoto, there are some things and emotions that men and women, like me and your mother, cannot express. So, we leave it for the future. But all you need to know is—we love you.”

“What do you think Mother would think of Kai?”

“Meh.”

“Dad!”

“Ow! You’re pinching right on the injury!”

“The Clan Traditions taught me to protect my man’s honor, remember? Say you like him!”

“You can’t force the issue! Your mother’s dad hated my guts, too!”

“You must break the cycle of hatred!”

“Don’t twist my words!” Yata cries in anguish, feeling worst at his words thrown back to his face.

A/N: The truth is, I planned to let Mikoto awaken her Mangekyo by killing Yata against the Third Raikage before creating an emotional scene between the father and son duo where Yata would try to stop her from awakening it, trying to steer her in a more positive light. But thankfully, I saw Sarada’s awakening and realized it sucked ass! I don’t wanna hate. After all, I used that mineral powder Sasuke used against Isshiki to stop Byakugan. I don’t mind good lore-building. But Sarada awakening it without enough training, will, and a mindset of grind like the Og talents bothers me quite a bit. I’m all for breaking the cycle of hatred when it comes to Mangekyo, but Sarada, too, in my eyes, awoke her Sharingan in helplessness. It would have been fine… but did Sarada love Boruto as much as Obito loved Rin to see her die? Or Madara and Izuna seeing their family getting slaughtered slowly? Did she watch her best friend commit suicide out of helplessness against the politics of the world like Itachi did? Did she see her brother die in front of her with the warmest smile?

So, yeah, you can say I didn’t like that awakening one bit. Her Mangekyo print is cool tho.

I've come to realize we don't give hiruzen enough credit. Aside from some stuff with gawk gawk danzo and Naruto, this man is practically a saint compared to others.. relatively speaking of course

FanHarem

Wouldn't it be a 'father-daughter' moment if it was Mikoto and Yata?

Dogan

Simple solution is if Kai figures out the Senju and Uchiha are cousins and just uses some of the first's cells on her. She ends up with a Rinnegan and then the two clans end up closer together realizing that they're stronger that way. Hiruzen will have to die though, as he'd stop at nothing to undermine them for his own clans rise to power.

Darkanlan

Makes sense to me. Given Kai's abilities it feels more reasonable he'll come up with some training method to help Mikoto be able to handle her eyes better. Maybe not unlock mangekyo but have a body able to handle it's stress.
