James Clavell’s novel captures a lot of the turmoil and political chaos of both internal Japanese politics and the invasive Catholic imperialism that was occurring. The attack by Ishido on the compound has more nuance that the tv series did not touch, neither in this version nor the previous 1980’s version. It was much more intense and the ramifications were more pronounced. However, you need the context of the book not the mini series, so they did a good short version of the attack and betrayal. I think the take the Japanese producers put on the internal mental conflict Mariko is having and Ochiba have on their silent moments and facial expressions are definitely a great example of acting nuance. Definitely a great production and best of for 2024.

I really think that Mariko's sacrifice WAS Crimson Sky. Toranaga knows that he doesn't have the army necessary to take Osaka in an all out invasion, so he sends Mariko to show the other noble families that they are in fact prisoners to Ishido and that he's willing to kill a noble woman to keep them as such. Granted, Ishido didn't want to kill Mariko, just capture her, but she put herself deliberately in harms way to ensure that the intended effect is inflicted. The heirs army defecting would be the only way to ensure victory against Ishido, and the best chance to win over the heir is to win over his mother (Ochiba) who will most likely see Mariko's "Murder" as an atrocity and make her fear her future husband.

Mariko uses in the opening line of her poem, while Ishido looks genuinely pleased and impressed. It's clear that Mariko intended to target Ochiba with her words, considering that Ochiba's name literally means "fallen leaves." Mariko's poem also alludes to the flashback scenes of her younger years following her father's great betrayal in which effectively disgraced Mariko's family forever. "The snow remains" points to the ice that Mariko still carries in her veins from that experience. If Ochiba is fallen leaves, then Mariko is the leafless branch, indicating how they have naturally distanced themselves over the years.
