I haven't seen anyone mention this entirely accurately, but for all the reactions so far: The written/pronounced names are different because the Chinese names are usually written the exact same way in Japanese, but they have their own pronunciation (as you figued out yourself). Funimation ended up just keeping the Chinese names in their subtitle translation for whatever reason. In southeast Asia, a lot of names are interchangeably pronounced just based on regional language since they're usually written the same way or have an equivalent. Tang (唐) in Chinese is Duong in Vietnamese, Dang in Korean, and Tou in Japanese. Small pronunciation guide in case it helps: He Liao Diao (huh lee-ow dee-ow) Piao (pee-ow, it's more of like one syllable, same for liao and diao, but you're otherwise pretty close) Qin (chin or cheen) Xianyang (shee-ahn yang) Ying Zheng (ing jung) Bi (bee) "i" is like "ee" "e" is pronounced like "uh" "u" is pronounced like "oo" "o" is pronounced like "oh" "ü" is pronounced like "ee-oo" merged together, so Lü is pronounced like "lee-oo" "sh" is like "sh" but it's in the middle of the mouth. the best analogy i can think of is like saying "sh" and "r" at the same time "x" is like "sh" but at the front of the mouth, where "s" usually is pronounced, so you were actually on point when you were watching episode 9 You might also be surprised to find out Kingdom is actually a seinen
