Sex Is Taboo 🤫

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us, Guy! It’s amazing how those early messages shape our experiences, but it’s also great that you found your way through it—comical courtship and all. 😊

I had a "good boys don't" training from parents uncomfortable with sex even though Mom had 5 pregnancies. I also had a Don Quixote attitude that I would protect women's virtue and in the process protected my own until a month before my 30th birthday. This resulted in very poor ability to interact with women at less than arm's length and uncomfortable with touch. This led to an almost comical "courtship" between my wife and me. I kept her at arms length for 6 to 8 months. We never even touched let alone hold hands or make out. Very rough for me emotionally on many levels.

A warm welcome to you, DVM! We're glad you're here. Glad to hear you're working out—an excellent treatment to counteract ED. Sometimes the type of penis pump and constriction ring size influences comfort. Would you mind sharing the one you've tried or specifically what was uncomfortable about it? Medications like Tadalafil and Sildenafil can be very helpful but definitely need to clear with your doctor before use. You can consider a slow acting, daily low dose like Cialis (Tadalafil) to trial or urethral suppositories and gels you can use for ED, but again, talk to your doc. Pelvic floor muscle training might be beneficial as well. It just all depends on the potential factors contributing to the ED—it's often multifactorial.

Hello - my first time here - I have BPH and had a Urolift procedure a few years back and in researching that procedure I learned about Dr Susie - so I have been ED for some time now - I have been working out and occasionally after a hard weightlifting session or cardio workout - the following morning I can experience an erection but they are few and far between - I have also purchased a penis pump but find it to be somewhat uncomfortable - my urologist has suggested using medication but I am fearful of the side effects - any other ideas???

This is truly disheartening, Works. 😔 I’m often invited to present at prostate cancer support groups, and I hear similar sentiments from the men in those groups.

susie@drsusieg.com

When I was being treated for prostate cancer none of my medical providers, female urologist, male radiation oncologist, male PCP were comfortable talking about male sexual function. My urologist said it was above her pay grade and eventually referred me to Men's Health in the OHSU urology department. This is pathetic as the most devastating side effect of treatment for prostate cancer for many men is the effect on sexual function.

Great question, Max! Yes, getting your heart rate up right before sex with exercise helps to increase blood flow to the penis. Also, inspiratory muscle training has good research to support it's role in endothelial function and lowering blood pressure. Heart health = hard health. 😉 There is also vacuum erection devices (aka penis pump) and pelvic floor specific muscle training that can help too!

susie@drsusieg.com

Are there alternatives to drugs for ED as far as specific exercises to increase blood flow in the pelvic area?

I remember being a sexual being and had the urge to talk to girls at a young age. Back when you asked a girl for her phone number to her house. Called the house and asked to speak with so and so. Writing notes all that. Wow I loved those times. 😊☺️

I found playboys at a young age when an older neighbor boy said there are play boys in the bathroom under the sink. I said what’s that. So he snuck one outside. I had the best tree first ever. Learned about The Birds and the Bees in Kindergarten after I drew a picture of me and my kindergarten girlfriend holding hands naked on the beach. She gave the picture to her parents, who passed it on to their parents who gave to the teacher and so forth. I grew up with 3 sisters. 2 older and one younger. There was so many girls around all the time growing up. Let’s say I spent alot of time in the garage, basement and in the woods. ;) got along great with my Dad. Mom was a bit of a loose cannon. Anyways I definitely felt alot of weenie gazing as a pre teen and teen. One unsettling thing was after my Mom was screaming at me when I was about 12-14 in the basement. I had a room and a hang out area with pool table etc. the table was my Grandfathers and parents had it refelted. There was a white stain and I can remember my mom going with a look on her face is that from you…. I’m like huh what…no. I mean I definitely was masterbating all around the room and basement but not ejaculating on a pool table for it to dry up. Probably was a drink spill or something. Huh totally had a lot of socks. ;)

Totally, feel so good . Why miss out on all there is for pleasure.

Marco, thank you for trusting this space to share your personal experience with us. This is so supportive and positive for others who are also anal curious. 😉

susie@drsusieg.com

I had always been curious about receiving anal sex as well. So I finally bought a pelvic wand and anal dilators. It's been a great learning experioence and journey so far. I am a smaller person so I've been able to use the two smallest dilators, and I've been able to insert the pelvic wand further than I thought I could! This exploration has really improved my life and sense of adventure. You are right Dr Susie, it can be yummy and really enhance pleasure, as well as having therapeutic benefits! I am thankful for creators like you.

Marco

That's too bad for them. They are missing out! There are so many sensory nerve endings around the anus that, for some people, can feel really yummy and enhance their sexual pleasure.

susie@drsusieg.com

I hear you, Brandon! Open and honest conversations around sex make sex that much more fun and enjoyable for everyone. And kudos for you trying to discuss your sexual health with your urologist. Unfortunately, so many medical professionals are not training in sexual medicine and have no clue how to confidently, compassionately have real sex talk with their patients.

susie@drsusieg.com

Thank you for sharing. For me, it was always "guys should like this..." "galz should like this..." as opposed to open and honesty...and really, we can all enjoy it all if it floats your boat, right? I'm learning as I go and even had an opportunity to share some details with my Urologist and she wasn't really getting what I was putting down. It was a typical MD type response...I tried at least! I left still feeling that something is going on. Hoping to do some appts with you, Dr. Susie!

Enjoying anal sex as a receiver. I’ve experienced toys and fingers from ladies I have been with as well as solo journeys. Anytime I have discussed it openly with friends, they have turned the experience into something that a male shouldn’t enjoy. I explained to them the sexual pleasure and the orgasm is intense and different. Some have been more receptive after, but most of my guy friends reject the premise.

Natas

I can only imagine how that must have felt for you as a teen back then and how that experience shaped your sexuality today. Thank you for trusting this space to be vulnerable with us.

susie@drsusieg.com

Thank you, Dr. Susie. For me, the shame comes from a combination of religious teaching and my parents—especially after I was caught in the act of masturbating on a beanbag chair as a teen. It still makes me feel queasy!!

Chuck Elledge

Thank you for sharing, Chuck. You’re absolutely right—shame around sexuality and self-pleasure is something many of us experience in different ways and intensities. This often stems from societal constructs, often rooted in purity culture, which transcends white American contexts and is present across various religions and cultures. Pleasure is a human right, and it’s important that our behavior around pleasure aligns with our personal values (body and heart), free from shame or societal judgment. I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts around this topic. ♥️

susie@drsusieg.com

So many…but the biggest ones relate to the shaming of self-pleasure. More thoughts soon.
