I'm not sure there's anything King Furry could have done and I think he knew that. He knew no amount of forces would stand a chance, as they pretty much already threw everything they had at him. All he could do is try to not anger Piccolo more. I recall Piccolo used the destruction of cities as threats against Furry, and most likely threatened even more destruction if he ran.

It actually hurts his people because he needs to flee to marshal enough forces to stand a chance against King Piccolo. He's also putting his guards at risk. Like dude, put your ego away and start thinking strategically.
