When the Gung-Ho guns gathered to kill all those Roderick Gang members they mentioned "Chapel" was off doing some other job. THIS is the job. Wolfwood was trained to take over the "Chapel" title. Catching the apple wasn't a test to leave it was to train him not to have hesitation.
