The Legend of Korra S3:E10 Full Reaction

His reasons to oust Tonraq aren’t explicitly stated, but I see it as him giving his older brother a β€œtest” of sorts. That forest was sacred to the spirits, so in Unalaq’s eyes, how Tonraq approached the situation would prove how worthy he was as the next northern chief. Take the slow methodical approach that likely results in more casualties BUT respects the spirit forest, and he passes. Or, well, level the whole place and prove what Unalaq already believed: that his brother lacked the spiritual reverence to properly lead the northern tribe.

I knew I was gonna have fun starting crap with the independence day thing. I'd put them about equal, personally. I just have more bias since I grew up with Independence Day but didn't see Jurassic Park until I was in my mid to late teens.

OOooo love this! Especially because as I read it my gut reaction was, how is wanting to be the dark avatar an objectively good goal? But as you so rightly point out that's because my last memory of his goal is reflected in his unbalanced objectives and not the good intentions that began his journey. So this is super insightful. Although, question or possible counter point, how did over throwing his brother and getting him exiled serve a spiritual goal? Wasn't that just Unilaq being a petty and jealous person who couldn't abide by living in his brother's shadow and who wanted power all for himself? Or was there a connection with his spiritual goals which I am forgetting now because it feels like the spiritual goals came after his greedy ceasing of power for power's sake. Which would make the spiritual goals a way of him justifying his actions to himself but not the actual reason behind first taking the action.

Thank you! πŸ™ Have a great weekend πŸ™‚

"They may not be good guys, but you gotta respect that they're getting shit done." - that's true and fair for giving credit where credit is due. "That's either Jurassic Park or the much more entertaining Independence Day." Okay now these are fighting words. πŸ˜‚ Independence Day is a super fun movie but Jurassic Park is cinema royalty and the line in Independence Day is a nod to the original delivery of the same line by the same actor in Jurassic Park.

"Anti team Avatar" - so accurate!

Zaheer actually isn't the first air bender to do that suffocation method. According to the Avatar comics that technique was invented by the Avatar Yangchen, the air bender that came before Aang. She made a brief appearance in ATLA in the series finale when Aang called upon his past lives to ask for advice on what to do about Fire Lord Ozai. And important thing to remember is air benders are pacifists but Avatars can't be since they have to be prepared to defend the world at any moment. All of the Avatars had questionable moments so what Yangchen did wasn't too outside the norm. Zaheer is a huge air bender culture nerd, he's shown that in the way he has learned everything about Guru Laghima so I wouldn't be surprised if he came across old stories about Avatar Yangchen and her technique. It's also possible he stumbled across it on his own like Hama did with blood bending and Toph did with metal bending. It was definitely a terrifying thing to do to the Earth Queen but it honestly made Zaheer a more interesting villain to me. Every time I see the Red Lotus members together it makes me think "anti team Avatar" lol. Bolin has achieved great things over the course of the show and I can't wait for you guys to see what else he goes through in the rest of his story arc. ;)

Lady RedShee

"Long live the queen." Here we go. I've been so hyped for this one. Also forgot that was the name of the episode, so now I can only think of Lion King. Honestly, I love the Red Lotus members. They don't get too much screen time, but they're legitimately fun characters, despite their goals. Say it with me: Asami. Is. MVP. LOL! I just noticed that, when that monster tore the ship in half and they were all running away, the captain was running with his hands still in his pockets. "That was...the wrong choice." It was at moment that Ken knew...she f***ed up. I have waited MONTHS for the moment. You two asked about it way back in season 1 of Avatar if something like this could be done, and here it is! The death of the Earth Queen is one of the greatest moments in the franchise, in my opinion, and I've been so excited to see the looks on your faces when it happens. I was not disappointed. Also, deserved. Ok, credit where it's due. Ozai wanted to control the world: Failed Amon, despite claiming equality, seemed more like he wanted the oppression of benders, probably to put himself on top: Failed Unalaq wanted to become a Dark Avatar and the most powerful person in the world: Almost succeeded, but ultimately failed Zaheer and the Red Lotus want to eliminate world leaders and lead the world into anarchy and let the people control everything...so far, they've already made the most progress to their goal. They may not be good guys, but you gotta respect that they're getting shit done. "Meet me at the bike racks after school." What, you think he wants to make a drug deal? Oh wait, that's probably a reference, huh? Wow, I actually missed one. "Must go faster." Ay, I didn't miss that one. That's either Jurassic Park or the much more entertaining Independence Day. Zuko's back in the bar where he and Iroh first met the white lotus member! See, this is what I love about the Red Lotus. Even you two are saying, "I get it. It's bad, but I get it." They are definitely the closest villains to sitting in a gray area. Hell, Zaheer just had you guys spend almost the entire post-episode discussion talking about him. I'm so excited. There is one aspect you guys keep touching on in some capacity that has a great payoff and I can't wait for the "OH SHIT" moment to come up. I feel like you guys are really gonna like it.

Yeah screw Unalaq! Lol but aside from that you gotta love the political themes in this show, brings it so much depth! As I'm re-watching this with you guys I am reminded of why Zaheer is a badass and a much better villain than the typical muahahaha villain that Unalaq was. Looking forward to another great reaction next week and I wish you both the best recovery from the flu!

the air nomads woulda been the scariest benders if they weren't pacifists

There is a little bit of a mischaracterization and misunderstanding regarding Unilaq (which is understandable, given most of his portrayal). Whereas the main villain of TLA, Ozai, was a full on evil dictator megalomaniac with absolutely zero redeeming qualities whatsoever, the villains of each season of Korra follow the same central theme: good intentions without balance. They all want something that is an objectively good ideology, but taken to the extreme. It’s more obvious to see with Amon (equality for all) and Zaheer (freedom), but it’s present with Unilaq too. His value was in the spirit world. He saw that having the earthly world and the spirit world divided was bad, and that people were neglecting both the spirits of nature and their own spiritual needs, and sought to fix that. Even Vaatu, dark spirit of chaos, is part of the balance of the universe. Pure light and order isn’t good for the world either. But Unilaq took this objectively good ideology, the need for spiritualism, to the extreme point that he no longer saw any value in humanity’s earthly existence. Yes he was willing to sacrifice the lives of his son and daughter, but it wasn’t for his own personal power grab, it was because even if they died, their spirits would continue to exist in the karmic cycle of the universe, which he values more than their mortal lives.
