Notice: Regarding Royal Road
Added 2024-06-22 10:36:41 +0000 UTC(Edit: I realize I said BoD is getting zapped off of RR, but didn't provide the mirrors. Updated the post.)
Heya everyone.
I got some sour news a few days ago from one of the moderators on Royal Road, one of the sites I post my work on. It looks like they've begun a crackdown on fanfics associated with patreon pages, and I was hit. I was told in no uncertain terms that either I had to remove every mention of patreon from my profile and non-original stories, or remove the stories entirely. Royal Road is planning on introducing its own subscription system, and the official reason stated for the crackdown is for legal reasons in the wake of that.
I think we can all read between the lines, but it's their website, so their rules.
I've decided to comply, so unfortunately the thank-you note on each chapter is gone. I'm sorry about that.
In addition, I decided to discontinue posting Borne of Desire on Royal Road, as the policy changes combined with unrest the RR crowd is feeling over the story content makes it feel not worth it. For now, Borne of Caution will continue to receive updates on RR edited to comply with policy.

You might see the ratings on my works tank as some users retaliate to the news with negative reviews. It's expected and already happening. If any RR readers want to help offset that, you can give me an honest review on the site.
This is just a quick notice for anyone who primarily uses Royal Road to read BoD and BoC.
Thankee much,
Fuggmann.

People are so petty lol. Why tank your rating over something you have no control over?

2024-06-23 04:33:48 +0000 UTCTo be honest, I haven’t read RR new policy so I don’t know what would be acceptable. But it seems like a workaround that could work as long as the page has more than a link to Patreon.

2024-06-22 23:08:58 +0000 UTCThat's what I thought, RR was the only one that didn't randomly stop in the middle of a word then start up a skipped letter later.

2024-06-22 21:45:00 +0000 UTCRoyal road has one of the better text readers tbh. Most others are reaaaaally bad.

2024-06-22 21:42:52 +0000 UTCCould also be they've already Been hit by those litigations and are currently backpeddling as a measure to keep their site up.

2024-06-22 21:42:04 +0000 UTCWould that work?

2024-06-22 21:40:42 +0000 UTCWill we still be receiving patreon news/emails with the latest borne of desire chapters *when* they're posted.

2024-06-22 21:40:15 +0000 UTCFuck that, I’m upping my patreon subscription.

2024-06-22 19:58:28 +0000 UTCFeels like the logical conclusion of this is to cross-post to your own homepage and reference it on RR as a place to find all your work and a support you. And then once there push for patreon. Those that want to support can click an extra link and you can get around the RR nonsense 😅

2024-06-22 18:39:52 +0000 UTCAmazon probably realized that RR could be like a feeder for them as most stories get pulled for KU

2024-06-22 18:28:55 +0000 UTCAlthough it's not my specialty, I can understand some of RR's concerns about people making money off of fanfiction where they could be hit by DMCAs and other things that would hurt the balance and site overall. It could also potentially open them up to liability. Fanfiction works operate in a technically not legal zone as they are not authorized derivative works and thus do violate copyright law. Usually, most companies don't go after fan works that aren't making money because it's bad pr and fan works tend to give free marketing for the IP. But the implication of money through patreon can cause some IP holders to get angry, especially the more notorious and litigious IP holders (like Nintendo). My guess is that Royalroad is starting to get popular and attention grabbing enough that they're probably having hard conversations about potential liability. Although, this is me giving the most charitable read on the situation. If they allow for any type of subscription on their site that indirectly involves payment to fanfiction works, then that's a load of bull.

2024-06-22 18:28:22 +0000 UTCI was going to explain the unrest but the more I wrote the more irritated I became, mostly because it felt like people were looking for reasons to get upset. That said this is bummer news for me because I really liked listening to the stories as I did something else. I don't know if any of these other sites have an app with a decent text reader. As for the policy... I don't see it making them much, I did get their subscription to support, and for the bonus app features. however them only targeting Fanfic makes sense simply because it is a gray area and authors could do something, but that would be a show very few would enjoy. That said, They aren't getting rid of fanfics as far as I can see and unless they don't allow this new subscription system to be used on fanfic stories, I fail to see the point.

2024-06-22 17:59:38 +0000 UTCSigh seems RR wants more money because fanfics are doing better than the originals. Or mature things are the target, guessing words do hurt people: "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”

2024-06-22 14:22:48 +0000 UTCWeird that Amazon is supporting them... welp greed leads the way...

2024-06-22 14:08:34 +0000 UTCAnnoying indeed. Most stories ive chosen to assist donation wise via pat were found on rr....so this move just bugs me a bit especially if it's done cause they want to set up there own donation type of site themselves....and plan on getting a cut of the money.

2024-06-22 13:25:56 +0000 UTClol RR readers upset over the *content*? Jesus that’s dumb of ‘em Also sad news since I prefer RR to most other sites when a story is available there

2024-06-22 12:30:29 +0000 UTCIt's also dumb af, as they already have a subscription service for extra features

2024-06-22 12:20:32 +0000 UTCOnce companies and their creators get big enough they all want a slice of the little guys pie.

2024-06-22 12:00:13 +0000 UTCThat sucks. May I recommend ScribbleHub instead in that case?
