Starting at panel 2, this was a real conversation, but J wasn't involved in it. He was there, but I said everything out loud to us both.
Our firstborn was an angry baby and a difficult toddler. When you're in that situation you tend to keep looking for the milestone when things will turn around. It will be better once he can walk, talk, 2yrs, 3yrs....! The goalpost keeps moving. I mused that things would have to get better at 4 because I'd never heard a name for 4 year olds like the classics at 2 and 3. I looked it up and sure enough, internet came back with "Fucking Fours". I couldn't help but laugh! :)
I started this comic with them facing the opposite ways because it made more sense for panel 1 that we look at Joel asking the question and then Fran answering. Once I got to panel 4 though I realized that reading the punchline and THEN seeing Joel's expression was much better, so I flipped everyone around.
This one came together nice and quick thanks to being able to resume a lot of art. I just modified old linework to make them more rugged and Joel's tummy slightly smaller than usual to show him in the toddler years.
