Making of "Mandarins" (Part 1)
Added 2024-01-05 14:15:41 +0000 UTCJust like my oldest I was (and still kind of am!) a very fussy eater. When I resisted eating some mandarins at my Granny's house, she enticed me by wiggling them around like a little goldfish. Call it foreshadowing, but I liked imagining I was a cat, so I eagerly gobbled them up! Ever since then, mandarins have always remind me of her and sometimes when nobody is looking, I waggle them around and pretend they're a fish. :)
Fast-forward to being a mum myself and my kids were happily eating mandarins. Watching them and thinking fondly of my Granny, I told them the story of how she got me to eat them. Absolutely disgusted by the idea, my oldest has never eaten them again!
I've wanted to tell this story for some time, but knowing that long comics don't do well out in "the wild", I kept pushing it aside. As soon as I opened the door to subscriber exclusive cat comics, I knew this was where I wanted to start!
For the comic version, it made more sense to make it about Fran's Mom. She's never been in a comic before, so before I did anything I had to design her! More on that in another post. Once I had her down I had the idea of mirroring Vincent from a previous comic called "Don't Blink":
Did anyone spot the parallels? I find it deeply satisfying to look at them both side by side like this! :D
