PRiNCESSViLLE *Goth-Prom* (Work-In-Progress 03) COLOUR TEST!

So, obviously from the previous work-in-progress image and this image, you can all see I went back and redrew the work I had already done on the page. there was only around 3-4 frames I had to re-draw, but I'm much happier with the results.
It wasn't an easy decision, as this more cartoony drawing-style is still very much a work-in-progress for me. As I'm still trying to find a balance between realism and a more cartoony drawing style, which I can eventually be happy with for this comic (and the PrincessVille World in general), I'm not quite there but I would like to think I'm another step closer. :)
I hope those among you who prefer the previous work-in-progress sample aren't too disappointed. :-s
BUT in terms of frame composition for the addition of Speech Bubbles & general Visual Consistency for the PrincessVille World, this Drawing-Style of Characters allows me to do a lot more with the frame space and visual personality. Which is very good because my initial Script-Draft had enough text to fill 2-3 pages Standard Comic Pages. ^^
The frames above are a Flat Colour Test for the first frame and I'm really looking forward to adding the shadows and highlights, as I always feel like that's when the characters come to life. :D
I'm hoping to be finished with the Line-Arts either tonight or tomorrow and then the colour work should take a day (maybe 2 days at the most), so the page will be finished very Soon. :)

So if there's even the slightest chance that the characters are viewed in a Manner not befitting Mature-Adult-Characters, then its something I take Very Seriously.

The animated style is actually more expressive, and that's something you we're aiming for right? I would not classify this as a failure. So stick with it for now and see it through. Evaluate your work when it's done and people have had time to give it proper critique, myself included.

2019-03-21 14:03:32 +0000 UTCHaving the very word 'Chibi' mentioned is something I was hoping to avoid as it means I've definitely failed in the style I was going for. As your right in what you've mentioned above, So I've already started editing and re-adjusting the characters faces on the page.

I think calling it Chibi-ish was overblown on my part. I can see some potential that could NOT be achieved with a realistic style. So I think I'm starting to see this as very positive evolution.

2019-03-21 09:48:26 +0000 UTCI'm going to agree with Deliciously in that I prefer the original designs. The Chibi-ish style is far too prevalent in character designs these days. But I understand the fundamental benefits of doing this style. It's easier to draw, and gives more flexibility to color. It's also a safer way to promote your wares because it's cute. You can literally illustrate the most cruel bondage scene and it will still be seen as adorably cute. This is a great way to buffer yourself from any potential backlash that would otherwise exist if the style was more realistic. So again I understand it. I think the Chibi-ish style for Princessville will eventually get you in hot water because if this strip becomes more recognized, it's going attract the wrong people who would otherwise confuse this as safe for children to read, or worse accuse you of preying on children with cutesy style. That's my paranoia speaking. Personality and charm can be achieved with realistic art styles, it's just matter of establishing it with consistent characteristics. Arthur's style is more of blend of Chibi and traditional caricature toons. Especially in regards to genders. His males have long faces and stout figures while his females are round faces with petite child-like figures. You don't draw traditional males, so the diversity of Arthur's style is never going be seen, no matter how close you pay homage to his style. Don't get me wrong, his females are lovely. But they are notoriously full of cuteness and borrow some Chibi-flavor. Even if it's subtle. You are still a young artist and your style is continuing to evolve, so while you might be going through a period of adjustment or an evolution of styles there are some elements in your art that will remain constant. It will be what defines your style. So while I'm not keen on this style I urge you to keep going. You'll find a comfort zone where you can put out your best work.

But, it's very much my hope as I come to grips with what will hopefully be more of a cartoony (with touches of realism) style that it will give these pages (and the characters who inhabit them) more personality. The fact that these characters are appearing chibi-ish means they are not yet the visual goal I'm aiming for.
