series 2 was almost not made, take a read of this. 1. Budget Constraints – Threatened to Cancel Filming Production was nearly halted just six weeks before shooting began due to significant budget shortfalls. Director Peter Kosminsky revealed that even after trimming props, costumes, cast, and locations, the funding gap remained too large to proceed at one point. BBC Damian Lewis To salvage the project, Kosminsky, Mark Rylance, screenwriter Peter Straughan, and producer Colin Callender took substantial pay reductions. BBC Cirrkus News 2. Eliminated Outdoor Scenes & A “Conversations in Rooms” Feel Almost all outdoor and large-scale scenes were cut, including a lavish jousting sequence originally envisioned by Hilary Mantel. The production shifted heavily toward interior, dialogue-driven settings—leading Kosminsky to describe it as becoming “conversations in rooms.” BBC Damian Lewis Geo TV 3. Cost Surge – Double the Original Budget Colin Callender noted that the second series cost about twice as much to produce compared to the first, a rise driven by inflation in production costs and financing difficulties. Cirrkus News 4. Cast Availability, Recasting, and Aging The decade-long gap between seasons complicated scheduling. Some actors had become too in-demand (e.g., Tom Holland), while others had passed away (e.g., Bernard Hill). Timothy Spall stepped in to replace Hill as the Duke of Norfolk. Cirrkus News Wikipedia +1 The showrunners were pleased that most key cast returned, allowing for continuity even as characters aged, which Kosminsky felt worked narratively. Cirrkus News 5. On-Location Logistics & Environmental Challenges Filming on authentic Tudor sites (like National Trust properties) posed logistical hurdles: Scenes at Wolfeton House involved constructing a fake road for vehicles; one vehicle got stuck in mud, consuming an entire day to recover and two weeks to restore the site. The Times Scheduling depended on tourist seasons to access certain heritage locations. Vulture Cirrkus News 6. Casting Controversy & Changes The second series employed colour-blind casting, bringing in diverse actors such as Amir El-Masry as Thomas Wyatt and Sarah Priddy and Cecilia Appiah in the Seymour family. This met both criticism (e.g., from descendants of historical figures) and support—Mantel herself had expressed approval before her death. HELLO! The Times Wikipedia Some viewers found the diverse casting jarring or inauthentic, sparking debates on fidelity versus modern inclusivity. Reddit The Times 7. Challenges with Recasting & Viewer Reception Multiple major roles (e.g., Norfolk, Gregory Cromwell, Jane Rochford, Chapuys) were recast. While many fans appreciated that key leads like Rylance and Lewis returned, some found the recasting disorienting, especially in a complex ensemble of historical characters. Reddit +1 Wikipedia 8. Visual & Structural Tone Shifts The series was darker in tone and more claustrophobic than its predecessor. Fans noted the reduced outdoor scope and darker cinematography, which felt “studio bound” compared to the first season’s more visually expansive style.

The second series I was stressed the whole time bc I knew what was going to happen and it’s another masterpiece in my view . Only thing that I found annoying was Timothy Spall who I usually love but I felt he overacts in this a bit. Wonderful acting from others though. As I said before , Mark Rylance is a phenomenal actor.
