Yes Minister S2 Ep2 "Doing the Honours" REACTION!

The dynamic between Humphrey and our Minister is brilliant.

I thought you said he cracked his nuts on a bowl. Sounded eye watering for a second

When we Brits say that we make the finest and most diverse comedy in the world it’s not some idle brag, it’s a factual statement. Can’t argue against it. I temper watching this in he 1970s, still great now, as you alluded to.

That was me with the bored comment. Guilty. But you did look knackered! As can happen with a toddler and everything. Enjoy the break if you get it! Love all your reactions - totally getting into the films at the moment and Derry Girls. Long time youtube watcher, new to Patreon. And you did my favourite film of all time as a Scot - Local Hero.

One Christmas before COVID I saw my stepdads stepdad crack some nuts from a bowl they've got. Also, my brother was amongst those of us joining him and chatting, and just used his hands. He's got skinny fingers like me, but he's had some big-arse arms for about 15 years, since his teens and my childhood.

A Bennite solution refers to Anthony Wedgewood Benn. He was an upper class Labour politician, in his earlier days he was an enthusiast for all things modern and futuristic, later he became the leading figure on the far left of the party. Throughout his career he had a tendency to "novel" thinking, so was not at all "sound". Its a rare reference in the show to what was then a current real life politician.

Current price of a degree in the UK is around 10k a year.

The actual salary now, rather than this figure adjusted for inflation, is ironically about £156,000! ($210,000)

Wormwood Scrubs is a notorious prison in London, and the University of Sussex is used as a disparaging “common” education establishment which lacks the sophistication and refinement of an Oxford college. The Scrubs gets two mentions in the episode, both at the college - first in that scene where they decry the fact that they fear losing their eliteness and be overrun by the uncouth, and the second when Hacker is on his drunk rant about not being able to send Humphrey there for a three year stretch for annoying him all the time

One of my favourite lines is from a drunken Jim saying "now, if I were a judge, I could whizz old Humpy off to The Scrubs, no trouble". In case you didn't know, Wormwood Scrubs is the name of a prison in West London, usually just referred to as 'The Scrubs'.

Thanks as always KB another great reaction, I ran the £4,000 a year tuition fee through an inflation calculator and from 1981 to 2025, £4,000 a year on tuition fees is now £15,500 a year….. which is about $21,000 a year in your dosh! Bailey college not cheap! Incidentally that means Sir Humphrey’s annual salary is in the region of £116,000 in today’s money … $156,000!

My take away: when you grow pubes, you lose the ability to see people crack nuts.

Enjoy your well deserved time off to recharge the batteries.

Ghosts is very very good and very funny . . . The Detectorists is beyond good. It's as close to a perfect show as British TV has produced in the last 30 years.

Dryfesands

Charming is the word. A couple of other charming shows to consider; Ghosts (uk) and The Detectorists.
