Kacee, u misinterpreted Anne on saying she feels "elated". U gotta look in-between the words to really understand what she meant. Angel said it best in comment ^^^^

2022-04-04 19:52:51 +0000 UTCA more direct translation of Anne's description of her feelings would actually be "heart-pounding" instead of "elated" so there could be multiple interpretations. I personally think that she is shocked that there are evil people out there who don't fear God, which makes her feel some relief over her own sin. Also, while she grieves her family and hope they are in heaven, she feels strangely relieved to be alive and not with them (her heart is still pounding). When I read this part in the manga, I wondered whether the mangaka himself was trying to put himself in the shoes of Christians during that time. Believing in an upcoming apocalypse but at the same time dealing with the harsh living conditions of life back then and war. Were they able to remain devout? Or did they question things and struggled with their devotion? Vinland Saga is interesting in that it can get quite philosophical at times...the priest's search of love (in the Christian sense) is the part of a certain thread that will tie into future episodes.
