HEART BREAK HIGH E4 - UNCUT

Comments

Yes, this!! It's not just that he's high/drunk - it's that he's high/drunk and in an INCREDIBLY vulnerable state after a seriously traumatic event that no one else in the group bar Missy could really understand because it's not just racism, it's all the underlying and historical mistrust and mistreatment between cops and our First Nations peoples in Australia - the way Malakai was the only one singled out in that large group, the aggression the cop displayed towards him from the get go. And Harper making it like it's Amerie's fault or she was a bad person for not going after him - in all honesty, her going after him at that moment probably wouldn't have helped with the emotions that were flying around. He needed someone to be there, but he also needed that someone to NOT do what Dusty and Harper do.

Elspeth Clarke

I'm exactly the same, like - I think Missy sums it up the best in the next episode but's so fucked. I'm pretty sure he mentions at some point this is his first time taking something, but he's off his face on a combination of drugs and alcohol and then he's just been assaulted by a cop, had his trauma accidentally shared with the word and then they introduce MORE drugs and sex? Whether or not in the moment he 'chose' to participate as a reaction to his trauma, he was in no way fit to consent. I hate this scene, and I hate the way the aftermath is handled over the next few episodes, it's the one major thing that gets to me in this show and I hope they come back to it in the new season and properly address it.

Elspeth Clarke

Them, repeatedly: What is that? Me, repeatedly: IT'S A COCK!!!!!!

Mildred Locke

The way every person there arked up instantly when Malakai was body slammed to the ground… True allies 🖤

Kim Engel

Yeah. The last scene was the turning point for me for the series and Harper/Dusty in general, when I first watched. It was such a messed up thing to do and spoilers..... they never really address how little consent there really was. I feel terrible for Malakai. Beat up and profiled by police, drugged and then basically taken advantage of. Terrible.

Kevin

you missed Sydney world pride 2023 and Mardi Gras 2023 which was a 2.5 week pridefest.

Kelly

The scene with the police officer really triggers me. As a woman with a Nigerian father I always feel so sad and also extremely angry when racist shit like this happens…. #blm ✊🏾

Frances

I'm loving your reactions to this, and I cannot wait for you both to do the rest of the season!!!

Marj

I definitely found that last scene sad. Malakai is not in a good headspace and I find Harper and dusty are taking advantage of him.

Mads

Australian Mardi Gras is one of the largest LGBT + events in the world. It goes for 3 weeks through Feb and March with heaps of events and ends with the Mardi Gras Parade in Sydney which is attended by hundreds of thousands of people each year. It started in the 70's as a rights protest march and grew from there. It will be it's 46th year in 2024. Literally everyone from my high school went to the parade and it's been 20 yrs since I was at school 😂

Nikita Hankinson

Wagging is just skipping. So when they’re saying they’re wagging school and things, it’s just skipping school/skiving. I don’t know if teens in school in the UK still say “wagging it” but I used to use it when I was at high school in early 2000s x

Rainydais

I disagree, I don’t think the kids are all good and truly progressive. I think a lot of the boys see themselves as feminists but then Spider is blatantly not, but even Dusty in the conversation with Harper manipulated her into kissing when she had just said she didn’t want to, because he was able to flip the conversation and make himself the victim for her even asking if he talks about having sex with her to his male friends. All of them act like they don’t need more sex ed either, and yes the sex ed is terrible, but that last scene shows how they don’t truly understand consent. I think the show does a wonderful job of exploring how gen z are “better” in many regards but misogyny, homophobia, racism, and ableism are so deeply embedded in our culture

Florence

Now I can’t unsee the Bowie comparison 🤣

Charlie

What didn't make the uncut version in the first 2 minutes!!!!

Rachel

Guys - really love your reactions!! I had to stop now at almost 40 mins where you are enjoying everybody going to a queer event (I do, too!). at the same time, I believe this show is excellent in portraying how little this means in the sense that - yeah, its cool to hang out at mardi gras, boys wearing nailpoilish etc etc but at the same time the boys are toxic ,sexist pr*cks - impersonated esp by spider, who considers them all to be feminist lol

annika

I feel so bad for Malakai. I won't spoil anything, but I'll just say that the threesome, while quite lovely, won't do a thing to help the trauma he's experienced.

Chris Metzger

I could not wait for your reaction to the threesome! I felt the same way, but at the same time felt awful for Amerie. She's going to want to kill Harper. Yet another betrayal. First Dusty, now Malakai. Considering Amerie's day dream of Malakai and Spider making out a few episodes ago, she'll be even more angry that she wasn't the one having the threesome with them!! lol

Chris Metzger

Loving this series!!! But pls guys when are getting a movie reaction of GBF? 👀

Henry Riley

I feel Harper and Malaki were both reacting from trauma perspective. Sadly, it is a choice that hurts many people including themselves, but trauma can lead to poor processing and decision making. The only thing I do wish is this show referenced any form of mental health help. The teachers a few times ask if they need help or want to talk but there is never a counselor involved which is quite sad.

Samm Daugherty

Gosh I been waiting for you to do this episode for your shocked faces 😜 So many mind blowing moments. I was not prepared for the final moment in terms of what it means for Harper and Amerie’s relationship. 🤯 I have such mixed feelings about their friendship. They both hurt each other quite a bit even when the full story comes out and I came away from that show wondering how good a friendship they really have. You definitely elicited some thoughts at the end. When you were talking about these kids being more open to varying sexuality and gender fluidity, I realized that this show likely speaks well to a gen z experience. Being more open in terms of sexuality and gender in nonbinary terms but still being educated in schools that aren’t liberal. Heck, in the states we have “Dont say gay bills” and book bans on top a surprising amount of states still teaching abstinence only education. The dichotomy that must exist between their beliefs and understanding and what is being taught. Obviously, homophobia, toxic masculinity, and poor sex education are not new concepts as a millennial but different sexual preferences or gender identities were not considered the norm or acceptable when I was teenager so that dichotomy was not as stark. To have such progression in the thoughts of youth with little progression in the framework of the education we provide is unacceptable

Samm Daugherty

Since you asked more than once, it's a penis with lights all around and then streamers and more lights coming out of the top, like a glow wand, that's what Ca$h stole for Darren.

Sam

the part where malakai was holding the flowers and balloon reminded me of heartstopper when tao is waiting outside the paris meeting to ask out elle haha. "shall we make this a fish?" *nearly spits out drink* haha! mardi gras is pride in australia. usually held in major cities with the biggest being in sydney - i guess you'd call it the pinnacle of pride month. there's usually a parade with floats and stuff.. and a lot of people line the streets and spectate. a lot different to the "mardi gras" that the US has on bourbon st, new orleans or wherever it is. also, i think the "cock and run" was because the big lit up white thing they stole was a giant penis with fairy lights on it. the cop incident with malakai is an important piece of the episode and overall the show. there's a level of racism in policing in australia against first nations people (which malakai is). i didnt see a warning come up on the episode before you started.. but when i played it here in australia it had a trigger warning saying "this episode features an assault against first nations people" or something to that effect. despite first nations people making up only 3% of the australian population, about 30% of the prison population are first nations people. this is in part due to systematic racism and police often target first nation people who are just minding their own business. it is rarely ever shown in TV shows (simply because there arent many australian tv shows), but also a large portion of australian TV series don't have first nations actors in them. the raising of awareness of this very important is significant. also, a lot of the "slang" used by malakai are terms used by first nations people.. which is why you hear him say words like "deadly," "wild," "unna" etc. also, when he saw missy in the ball venue, he talks about her being his brother because she too is a first nations person.

LM-Entertainment Australia

drunk, high and traumatised is not the headspace to consent to anything

Rosie Dickinson

I really didn’t think I would become so obsessed with this show!! It’s brilliant!!! Also, Spider weirdly reminds me of David Bowie…do you guys see that too? 🙈🙈🙈

Frances

Josh you were so close to getting a comment out about how questionable that last scene was. Malakai had just been through a major trauma, was high/drunk, in shock... and Harper & Dusty's idea is that it's a great time to sleep with him? In my opinion it's totally inappropriate AT THAT TIME because he is not in the right headspace to make decisions about having sex. Like if you're at a party and want to hook up with someone who's so drunk they're basically nonsensical, your responsibility is to NOT try to have sex with them at that moment. It just gave me the ick.

Rowan Cannell

awesome reaction though. i've been waiting for a new reaction video every day and i was literally screaming from joy when i saw the notification. this show only gets better!! can't wait for the next one!

Ines Koivisto

i hate the last scene so so much (it's important for the story, yes, but fuck it's just so fucked) i was so happy harper and dusty were being amazing friends, because that's exactly what malakai needed after what happened, but ohmygod he was just so out of it (because of drugs AND emotionally after what happened) and then THAT'S what they thought of to do to/with him... oh fuck i feel so so so bad for him. literally all he needed was a friend and to sleep and to be safe. no one deserves that and especially not from their friends.

Ines Koivisto

I stopped to add a comment after the class because I know it all goes to hell in the rest of the episode but this is still common. I work at an organisation providing relationship education and the default is to provide this for young women first instead of highlighting young men. I get contacted by girls groups but have to seek out groups mainly focused on young men. We try to target sports teams specifically for this reason because boys need and want this conversation too. Thankfully the programme I work with and other similar ones are so much better then this police session but these same attitudes still exist and it is exhausting.

Rosie Dickinson

i said that i would subscribe to your patreon just to see ALL of your reactions to this episode and here i am, completely “in an innocent video watching way” satisfied! can’t wait to see your minds blown for the next ones yay

ofpurpleandblue

The warning at the beginning of the show was talking about the violence against people of the First Nation, which Malaki is. So what the officer did was basically a hate crime.

Kim Engel

Mardi Gras is the climax of Pride events. Every parade float is pride themed, and it began as a protest march.

Kim Engel

also yes there is both mardi gras and pride and mardi gras is kind of mix of carnival and pride but more on the pride side of things

Grace Pryor

Alex and Josh, you two are already acting a bit Frisky and I’ve only seen a couple minutes of the video. BTW No complaints here. Carry On 💕

Diane Furlong

wagging is like ditching or skipping school

Grace Pryor

Can you please post Young Royals episode 3. It’s been weeks since the last episode now 🙏🏻.

Marstrand

I’ve been waiting for this one purely to see your faces at the final scene haha
