I think the reason he didn't do it for a reward is that as he said, they'd have to fight them eventually, since the orc lord is just trying to consume everything in the forest, so even if he didn't accept, they'd have to fight, except they'd be stronger from having eaten the lizardmen. Also joining forces with the lizardmen is better than having to fight alone against even stronger orcs.
