Twilight is Jealous?! | My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Season 5 Episode 22 REACTION + Discussions

Your last two paragraphs hit it on the head. It’s a mix of all of those views as it seems very insensitive, discord being his tongue and cheek self, and also shows the human flaws and darker parts of friendship and FOMO. It’s a tough episode to get a firm grasp on but I liked they tackled it. Also the scientific friendship replication was huge though I think Twilight going to intense lengths was a bit uneasy. Still a valuable episode!

- Some notes/thoughts/facts: - Oh nice, Watermelon... i want some too! 😄 Did you ever try sheep's milk cheese with Watermelon? Its a great combo! - If you have the chance, try it 😄 Naturally Twilight likes to sort books as "book-sort-cation", she still had nothing better to do 😋 (The map still didnt call her) We also get to see some lifesigns from Owlowiscious! Somehow, discord managed to be friends with the rest of the Mane 6 which is strange considering episode "Three's A Crowd" (S4E11) where they definitely didn't want to have anything to do with Discord... Twilight Sparkle: "Spike, I'm the Princess of Friendship. I don't get jealous. I'm sorry I missed out because sharing that experience would've helped me with my Princess of Friendship duties!" - Yes you are jealous... Twilight Sparkle: "If our friends could enjoy three full days with Discord that much, it must have something to do with the specific things they did together! If we could find out what those things were, it could be a real breakthrough in the science of friendship!" - ...but its also not that wrong... but to call it a science is a little bit ... much, still i get where she is coming from by saying that. Anyway Twilight shows some signs of stress here... and as we all know this will lead to some kind of desaster... So they try to replicate everything, even suggesting Timetravel (which was a nice reference to "Back to the future" - as you pointed out, im proud of ya 😄) - but Twilight denies it, because she learned first-hoof that its not to be messed with in "It's about time" (S2E20). - And as you already know, Starlight Glimmer was here spying on them: https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/d/dc/Discord_%22what_a_brilliant_idea%21%22_S5E22.png Despite their efforts, to attempt to recreate the weekend fell flat, revealing the real issue: Discord: "You weren't there observing us. No matter how hard we try, we can't possibly recreate our weekend of fun exactly as it happened because you'll always be watching, and you weren't there." - Discord's point is clear: the magic of the moment can't be duplicated with an audience that wasn't there, and his game becomes apparent - he is intentionally doing that: Discord: "It has only served to prove that moments of levity and bonding between friends simply cannot be recreated so that others might share in the experience." - He's right—those moments are unique, tied to the memories and feelings of the time. Even if you could record them, it wouldn’t be the same. Remember in "Too Many Pinkie Pies" (S3E03), when Pinkie tried to multiply herself to join every activity with her friends? It also wouldn't have been the same as being truly present. Twilight Sparkle: "I'm not buying it. Not for a second. There is definitely something else going on here, Spike! ... Our friends think something great happened to them while I was away, but no. It was something awful! If we don't break the spell they're under, who knows what terrible things could happen?!" - Twilight suspects something deeper, but it’s more psychological than magical. Discord’s exclusion of her was intentional: he wanted her to feel the fear of missing out (FOMO) and grow from it. Twilight Sparkle: "Don't be embarrassed. So what if Discord cast a spell on you so you thought you had a great time, and now you have all these inside jokes that you seem to be constantly laughing at? Don't worry! You didn't have your defenses up. I get it." - Twilight's arrogance shows here, though it’s understandable given her stress - it’s a displacement activity affecting her psyche. Still, she was able to reason and reflect on her behavior after that. Thats btw. a nice fanart by Discord... https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/3/30/Discord_appears_as_Bob_Ross_again_S5E22.png Discord: "Certainly we can all agree that Princess Twilight learned a valuable lesson here – that even she can have feelings of jealousy, that she should recognize said feelings rather than trying to pretend that she doesn't have them. Mm-hmm. Did I get the tiniest bit of glee out of watching her try to recreate our weekend of fun in the name of science? Oh, most definitely! But what's important here is that it was never my intent to make Twilight feel jealous. That's something that the old me would have tried to do." - Discord admits he instigated this whole situation, but the lesson learned is indeed valuable. And in a delightful twist, the Mane 6 turn the tables on Discord, lightening the mood and getting their own bit of revenge. Twilight giving him the orange symbolizes her understanding of his intentions and shows that she didn’t take it too personally. --- In conclusion, this episode of MLP (S5E22) was a unique exploration of Twilight Sparkle's character, highlighting her flaws and vulnerabilities, especially under stress. While her jealousy and reliance on the "science of friendship" might seem out of character, they are understandable given the extreme pressure and fear she faced - especially the fear of missing out and the anxiety that her friends might be under some sort of control. Her scientific approach to friendship, although sometimes excessive, aligns with her broader inclination to overanalyze and delve deeply into the mechanics of everything, including magic. Discord's role in the episode is complex, and while some see his actions as exacerbating Twilight's insecurities, it's also possible to view his behavior as a chaotic attempt to teach her a lesson. Given his history (Season 4 Premiere & Finale), especially his possible theory with Celestia, this isn’t far-fetched. The episode also highlights that Twilight still struggles to fully trust Discord, which isn’t surprising considering his unpredictable nature and tendency to create challenges for her. This episode has sparked mixed reactions within the fandom. Some criticize it for what they see as a regression in Twilight’s character, noting her uncharacteristic jealousy. Others feel that Discord's actions were more harmful than helpful. The Mane 5's apparent insensitivity towards Twilight's feelings also drew criticism. However, there are fans who defend the episode, appreciating its moments of realism and growth for Twilight. Personally, I see this episode as a bold attempt to show that even someone as wise as the "Princess of Friendship" can have flaws and moments of weakness. It’s also a reminder that Twilight places immense pressure on herself to live up to her title, sometimes to the point where she denies her own emotions, like jealousy. This episode is relatable because it tackles darker themes of friendship such as possessiveness and fear of being left out - emotions that are very real and human. Moreover, the inclusion of Discord’s antics, Zecora’s appearance, subtle references like Bob Ross and "Back to the Future," and even Starlight Glimmer's brief spying moment added layers to the narrative. Overall, despite its controversial reception, I found it to be a relatable, fun episode that effectively tackled important themes and contributed to Twilight’s ongoing development. It was a good episode that, while not perfect, had plenty of merits worth appreciating. Your conclusion was good, i saw it the same way - thank you for your insight here. 💙

Yes! Greta fomo and jealousy episode. Also her not always being composed in these situations. Ironically on the site I use, this was a very low rated episode so it makes me wonder if people didn’t like how twilight suddenly took a scientific and logical approach to knowing which maybe is a bit of a character miswrite? But I felt it was showing how as they said, you cannot replicate that and also decided on that. Felt more of an honest and nasty look at jealousy and even still mistrust in discord.

This episode is very underrated in my opinion, I enjoy it a lot, I relate to twilight here episode when it comes to missing out and not understanding inside jokes and moments that have came up with friends that I missed out, fomo is very real, very good writing.
