I was really excited for this episode because it shows a lot about Dean's relationship with his father and with Sam, and why he acts the way he does. There will be moments in future episodes where Dean's loyalty and the reasons behind it will bring you back to episodes like these where flashbacks and memories are important context for Dean's character. I'm glad Davion and Cameron picked up on some of the development between the brothers. "Dean basically had to be the dad" is a really important observation and extremely vital to your understanding of Dean's future actions. And yes, John did leave them alone for long periods of time. In this particular flashback I believe Dean is meant to be 10 where Sam would be 6 and it pisses me off to no end that John would leave a 10 year old to watch a 6 year old all by himself in a motel where he knew no one. I hate that John says “that’s my man” rather than “that’s my boy” because John calls Sam a boy and Dean a man. Also very telling of their childhoods. Dean has sacrificed a lot for Sam and saved Sam from a lot when he was young. I don't blame Sam for not being as loyal as Dean because although they grew up together John acted very differently toward each brother and I think this episode helps to show that. Instead of asking Dean if he was okay after almost having to shoot someone, monster or not, John berates him. And then John proceeds to only comfort Sam and it's very insightful of their characters. I'm really excited to see more of your reactions and I can't wait to see what else you pick up on regarding character development because there is a lot coming. Happy Hunting!
