I share all your copaganda videos with my comrades in the DSA. They’re very instructional on how what we consume shapes our lives and society more than we realize. I really liked this one because you challenged me to reconcile with a collective desire for a world without police and prisons and the desire for justice. What are the roots of this country’s ideas about justice? Is it through punishment and no one can ever be redeemed? Or can we revise our collective notions of what is a crime? (public urination) Can we then make systems that prevent people from ever needing to commit offenses (free public bathrooms), and if we determine that in cases of murder or rape, what rehabilitative treatment should be? Halden Prison in Norway is an excellent example for what this could look like. But that’s just on the civilian side. For cops, I started thinking about what defunding the police would look like as restorative. I have room in my heart for cops to quit their jobs and seek therapy for what they’ve internalized about society. And instead become bus drivers, electricians, sanitation workers, landscapers, construction workers, etc. Jobs that should have good wages, good union protections, and good equipment to do their work well. So all the things that we need — Medicare For All, free public colleges and universities (including medical schools), and passing the PRO Act (making it easier for workers to form unions) — will also be crucial to moving the ball further on defunding the police and funding these kinds of policies. I'm having a lot of complex feelings on how they're trying to deal with everything and not finding much good discussion online about it that goes beyond just applauding them for the effort.
