This video is a recording of a live Zoom life drawing session, aired on 21st August 2024. The recording is shared here so that you can catch up and draw from the session if you missed it, or continue to work on a drawing if you attended live! As this is a recording of a live session the quality is limited by Zoom and will be a lower resolution than our our tutored sessions which are recorded locally and undergo more rigorous processing before their release. Please feel free to work from the video directly, or to take a screenshot to work from - if you take a screenshot please do be mindful of the photo guidance below. Click the cog in the bottom right of the screen and select 1080 for the highest resolution image - if you're working on a tablet or phone, enable rotation and turn your devise into the orientation of the video for the best view.

This session was based on the artwork of the artist Glyn Philpot, whose work was recently the feature of a major exhibition at Pallant House Gallery. Philpot was a successful portrait painter and sculptor working in the early 20th century; as a gay man working at a time when homosexuality was illegal, some of his paintings caused controversy for their homoerotic connotations.
In anticipation of the exhibition the curator of the exhibition, director of Pallant House gallery and Glyn Philpot scholar Simon Martin convene a panel (including our pal Curtis Holder) to advise on the renaming of some of Philpot's depictions of Black male sitters, using language suitable to current language around identity and representation in modern art.
Artworks referenced: Guardian of the Flame (sculpture) / Acrobats Waiting Rehearse / Guendolen Cleaver / Balthazar
Dmac kindly relocated for the session after a wifi issue at his house, so we'd love to see some alternative backgrounds to his poses, inspired by Philpots work!
