It was early in the morning and the sun had yet to shine on the Evergreen Manor, yet all the staff that care for it were awake and getting ready for their daily tasks. The manor had some of the best servants money could buy, butlers from all around the world.

Among all those butlers lived one maid, a woman by the name of Rubi, who, while pretty good at her job, wasn’t the most confident person. She worked well when she was alone and no one was talking to her, but when she was with someone or being talked to, she was a nervous wreck.

She’d start stuttering and holding the bottom of her apron or even messing with her glasses, which tended to fall off her face, causing her to awkwardly crawl around on the floor until she found them, all while the butlers around her would laugh and watch.

Despite all of them being self-proclaimed gentlemen, none of them hid the fact that they thought they were better than her just because they were male. They even like to show off sometimes by doing the tasks assigned to her.

They would then show off and belittle her for not doing it quickly enough, but then because they spent all their time doing her tasks, she’d get stuck doing the work deemed for women, like cooking and washing the clothes of all the staff, which the butlers were supposed to do.

If that didn’t happen, then they were usually trying to find ways to sabotage Rubi in order to make her look bad. Like one time they added salt to the master's tea instead of sugar, so when Rubi brought him the tea, he spit it out, accidentally covering her in the tea.

Rubi was humiliated and had to go remake the tea, bring it to her master and then stand in the laundry room in her underwear while she cleaned her uniform; since that same day, her extra uniform had strangely gone missing.

Another time all the butlers somehow managed to get the same day off, leaving Rubi to do all the chores alone for the entire day, the same day the master was set to have a large amount of guests for a party.

Luckily Rubi was genuinely an amazing maid, and while she was nervous the whole time and did make a few mistakes from doing so much on her own, she managed to take care of the needs of her master and his guests.

Of course, that meant not sleeping that night, as after the guests left, there was a ton of dishes that needed to be cleaned, and the main areas of the manor needed to be dusted, swept and put back into proper order.

So the next day Rubi was a tired mess and made a ton of mistakes, fell asleep while pouring the master tea, and nearly drowned in the sink while washing some dishes. The butlers really thought she’d be fired for that, but surprisingly the master seemed to ignore it.

That only caused the butlers to start rumors about Rubi, because if they messed up the master scolded them, but he never scolded her. So they started to think she was doing something for the master that they couldn’t.

So it became assumed that Rubi was either the secret daughter of the master or even that she was his mistress, whom he keeps around and likes to pretend is a maid, but when the lady of the house is gone, the secretary and the master go to the master's room and spend time together.

Those things were obviously false; Rubi was an upstanding woman who loved to cook, clean, and serve like she had been. She knows it’s not exactly the most luxurious life, but it was better than the one she had before being hired, and she truly had a passion for it.

She’d tell the butlers that if she could, but being shy and nervous all the time kept her from speaking up or letting the butlers have it for the way they treat her. So she just got used to it, never really expecting it to change. She just continued doing her best and serving her master.

One day during the early afternoon, Rubi noticed that nothing had happened to her yet that day. She was doing all her own tasks, the butlers were doing theirs, and no one was messing with her. It was quite strange and, while unsettling in ways, was very nice.

Rubi was able to get her tasks done in record time, meaning she actually got to take her break that day, so she happily did so, though she had no idea what to do with it. So she went to the servants' quarters.

She was planning to just sit on her break and eat a small sandwich she had made for herself, but as she walked through the butler's section of the quarters, she noticed a freshly cleaned butler uniform sitting on the bed.

As Rubi stared at it, she wondered what it was like. To be a man, to be so handsome and confident in oneself. She’s always wanted to be like that, minus the mean traits the guys around her seemed to have. Rubi walked over to the suit and picked it up.

It was improbably stored, so she should have put it away, but no one ever said she had to do it right away. So she took it over to her section of the servants' quarters and closed the curtain that blocked her space from the men's.

She then put the suit on her bed and removed her uniform, folding it up properly and placing it on the hanger. She then took the pieces of the butler's suit and put them on. It was a little big, but she was amazed at how nice it felt.

It was so much easier to walk in, since she didn’t have to worry about her skirt lifting up. Rubi stood there smiling and chuckling as she flexed and pretended to be a confident, handsome man; the whole thing felt silly, but she really enjoyed it.

After a few minutes, she realized she needed to get back to work and started to panic. Rubi started panicking and stumbling as she tried to get her normal uniform, which caused her to fall, and her glasses came flying off.

Rubi panicked like normal and went right to look for his glasses. To his surprise, he found them right away, as he could somehow see them. So he picked them up and was quite disappointed to find they were broken.

He put them on to see if they would work well enough to let him finish his work for the day, and for some reason everything was blurry when he looked through them. So he took them off, a bit disappointed, at least until he realized something. All of a sudden, he could see without them on.

Rubi was confused and looked around his section of the servants' quarters. He was amazed to find he could see everything perfectly without glasses, which he’s never been able to do, not even when he was a small child.

Rubi let out a laugh as he said he must be seeing things. He then walked over to his dresser and placed the broken glasses on it; as he did, he noticed his reflection in the small mirror set up on his desk. Rubi let out a gasp and then lifted his gloved hand up to his face.

In the mirror wasn't the normal nervous girl Rubi had always seen. Instead, there was a handsome man with short blonde hair. Rubi was in awe of the man but couldn’t understand how he was seeing him in the mirror; he was a woman, always had been, right?

Rubi, starting to think he wasn’t actually seeing things or hallucinating in some way, reached his hands up to his cheeks and pinched them as hard as he could. It hurt, telling him that this was real, that somehow he turned into a man.

Rubi began checking himself over, trying to understand how this happened, but he stopped when he heard noise from the kitchen. It sounded like something broke; following that, the butlers started yelling about it.

Normally when something breaks or goes wrong, Rubi is blamed or yelled at to fix it, so he always tries to avoid trouble like that, but Rubi still heard them yelling and knew they needed help. So he didn't think twice before he started gracefully running towards the kitchen.

When he arrived, he found a broken water line under the sink, three completely soaked butlers freaking out, and one soaked maid actually trying to stop the water. The butlers stopped panicking when they saw Rubi and immediately asked him for help.

Rubi was surprised to find himself saying he could take care of it. Not because he couldn’t, but because he was so confident when he said it, he didn’t stutter, he didn’t feel nervous, and he felt calm and collected.

Rubi walked over to the sink and asked the maid to come out from under the sink. She did so, and Rubi crawled underneath and popped a secret panel off of the wall, which revealed the water shutoff valve. He turned it until it cut off the water, stopping the leak.

Rubi came back out and was met with four people with amazed looks on their faces. Rubi smiled, as it was the first time he ever felt his coworkers were proud of his work and his knowledge of the manor.

After enjoying it for a moment, he told the butlers to grab the cleaning supplies and mop up the floors. He then looked at the maid, who was someone completely new to him, and told her he appreciated her attempt to stop the water.

Rubi then showed her how to actually stop it, as well as how to pop the cover of the secret panel. She was excited to learn, and Rubi was happy to share, but more importantly, he loved having someone care about what he thought or had to say.

After that, Rubi told the maid that there was an extra uniform hanging in his quarters; she was free to take it and change out of the wet clothes. She smiled and thanked Rubi before running off. As she vanished, the butlers came back, and Rubi knew they had a lot of work to do.

So he got to work, like he always had—well, perhaps not like he always had, as he was much happier now. No longer the shy, nervous girl who everyone looked down on, but now a handsome man, who was confident, comfortable as himself, and someone everyone looked up to and relied on.
