He looked farther ahead than his opponents, instead of aiming for an immediate gain, he laid the groundwork for a victory in the future.

It's meant to be a parody of Evangelion. In particular, one of the characters, Gendo Ikari, had a habit of sitting like that while plotting, to the point that pose(especially tied in with the seemingly-glowing eye-hiding glasses) is referred to as the "Gendo Pose".
