However, I'd definitely agree with you that it always sounded more like Ling wanted to become emperor himself in the end and not just to save his father. So I don't know wheter this is Ling (or the story writersfor that matter) not thinking a step ahead an realizing that the old emperor never would give up his power if he knew how to become immortal or Ling just pretending not to intend to take over with the power of the stone.

Humans constantly try to kill one another, but we also constantly love and care for one another. It's because we're so imperfect, we'll always strive to become better than what we are; humanity has an unlimited amount of room for growth.
