its a combination his dad works in youth development, he's whole heartly about finding solutions to aide the future generations, his motto is in line of education and happiness of students, he's against parents that strike/ ignore their children. so after striking his own child and that child saying he's not even sure if either parents love him.... probably makes dad feel like a complete failure/ hypocrite.
