black & blue UPDATE

Deutsch: Good news!

Viel Spaß beim Lesen!
Eure MAUS!

Good news! Vacation is over, MAUS! is full of fresh energy and the plot finally continues!

With today's update, Derek is confronted with his worst fears, but also his most intense kinks. This is also autobiographical, kinda.... I had super strange dreams as a teen that - in my opinion back then - should NOT be sexually charged, but were. The subconscious is very interesting AND scary when you're a kinky person. X,D

Have fun reading!
Yours MAUS!

I can see why you made that choice, and you're doing a great job of writing in the perspective of the (gay) male sexe. Yes, I whole heartily agree with you that gender or sexe shouldn't matter that much in storytelling, but it does though. There so many male writers for example that can't write believable women (painting them as emotional wrecks or perfect glamazones), and the same goes for female writers (usually very one dimensional men). Anyone can write and express themselves in any perspective they choose, but to pull it off successfully, is something I don't see as much as I'd like too.

Funnily I planned on drawing b&b with a hetero couple at the beginning. I just chose to turn them both into men to get some ... distance from it! Because I put a lot of autobiographical stuff into that story that's kinda triggering. And also I love to draw cool guys. XD So I decided to make a boyslove out of it. I genuinely don't care about gender that much and Derek is the guy to deliver that message. Like: I don't care about your expectations. I can wear a dress with my male body, but it's not about being male, it's about being MYSELF!

On another note, I was following my own train of thought, as to whether B&B would work as a lesbian couple or a straight couple for a bit. It's a sort of a 'good writing check', just like the 'mirror image swap' for visual artists. It can tell you if the author is tapping into writing 'human', or more 'gender role specific'. And I was a bit conflicted, because I thought, the only prominent examples I could think of with those perspectives (that I read about), are the works of Marquis de Sade, 50 shades of Grey, and various smut manga's: all highly problematic works in my opinion, that don't answer my question about B&B. To be precise: Yes, your characters are very layered and human, but are women as much into BDSM? Is it realistic, or extremely niche? Thanks to Google, I found a good study and statistics to answer and enlighten me. And the answer is yes, the interest is almost equal to men in the researched female population. B&B could easily be represented by a lesbian or straight couple. Now this test was not really meant as a doubt on your writing skills, but more of a blockade in my own thinking/imagination, because for me it was a bit hard to see your story in a more 'femme light'. But that's just because I'm was still quite ill-informed on the subject. And I still occasionally blunder with a male gaze setting lol (This is the link to the source, you might find it interesting: https://medium.com/sexography/bdsm-are-more-men-dominant-and-more-women-submissive-e8fccd3cc026 )
