This episode feels like a set up, a bait and switch, and a piece of ominous foreshadowing all rolled into one...probably all of the above, right?
A fourth Eva is getting sent to NERV after a mysterious incident in America, a fourth pilot has been chosen (this episode does a great job of building whether it's Toji or not), more layers of Kaji and Akagi are unearthed, and the color of orange is DOMINANT in this episode packed with discussions of kindness and cowardice. Nothing noteworthy, right? *nervous laughter*

Yes, it was shocking to see how the committee and Gendo was interpreting that encounter and how we saw it go down with Shinji! I appreciate that Misato has grown more and more concerned for Shinji; it's not just a "job" for her, she cares for him, too! They're definitely anchors for each other! And yesssss, the mystery with the school, the dummy plugs, Gendo's schemes, Rei....it's all starting to build and yeah, Episode 18 is a DOOZY...and I feel it's just getting started, eh? Right off the bat the revelation that the committee and Gendo seem to believe that the Angel from episode 16 was actually trying to communicate with Shinji is pretty wild. In the previous episode, the audience would see Shinji’s introspective moments and think that they where simply some kind of near death hallucinations, shinji reminiscing on his life before passing away. So it’s shocking to find out that it was actually some kind of “mind probe” by the angel, and if you rewatch those niscenes it makes sense because “young shinji “ does act like a kind of outside observer to Shinji’s life, psychoanalysing him and bringing up memories that he would have rather not remembered. Misato also seems very concerned about Shinji’s mental state in this episode, and i think she really has grown into her role as his guardian as the show has progressed. I really love their dynamic and it really feels like they are each others “rocks” where Shinji helps make Misato’s life a little less solitary and chaotic, we know He cooks and takes care of cleaning, and Misato gives shinji a positive kind of “big sister” that genuinely cares about his well being. The main mystery in this episode about just who the 4th child is really kept me on the edge of my seat when I first watched this episode. And I do really like Toji and Hikari’s cute moments, very wholesome. There is also now questions surrounding Shinji’s school, the dummy plugs that are now ready to be implemented, and of course Rei’s part in Gendo’s schemes all make me very excited to see your reaction to episode 18!
