Neon Genesis Evangelion: Episode 19 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

**TAKING CHARGE AND TAKING HEED OF HEADPHONE WARNINGS**

On the plus side, Toji's alive, Shinji finally takes a stand against his father and NERV, and there's references galore in this gorgeously animated episode.

On the other hand, everyone looks at death's door, Kaji and Gendo are mysterious and cryptic, and Shinji may be trapped within a feral Eva that is finally "awakened" to "HER" true power? Oh. Oh, no big deal. And we have SEVEN episodes to go, yet. **nervous chuckle**

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Episode 19 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

That's really what I've loved most about it -- it doesn't shy away from mature, dark subject matter that's complex, but treats it with respect and dignity to its audience. I really love how this show has addressed all these topics so far and I'm ready to dive into the madness from here!

Romaniablack

Evangelion is a pretty special piece of media, because it doesn't shy away from tough subject matter, and does so in a very honest way. It's thoughtful and complex, raw, and difficult to process, which is why (in my opinion) is so impactful to so many. Can't wait to see how it all unravels!

Matthew Palfenier

Ahhhh, thank you for not spoiling! And duly noted! *Nervous chuckle*

Romaniablack

No spoilers, but if you haven't already recorded the next few episodes I would encourage you to throw out a general trigger warning for episodes 20 onward.

Matthew Palfenier

Yesssss, Shinji gaining all the agency in this episode -- he's come so far from when he was afraid to look his father in the eye in Episode 1, eh? And yessss, using the school to farm EVA candidates is highly disturbing...just as much as Rei being willing to sacrifice herself! But yes, Shinji taking a stand and mannnn...the animation is beautiful but that CLIFFHANGER and ominous exposition! @_@ Also, thank you for the inference on Introjection! That helps out a lot! Yessssss, I am very excited for next week, too! Thank you again for the kind word and comments!! :D :D

What a beautifully animated episode! We get a lot of answers in this but more questions in their place. And what a change Shinji has gone through, a far cry from the beginning of the series when he couldn’t even meet Gendo’s gaze. He speaks very assertively with both Misato and Gendo, and when Gendo says “you’re running away again” a line that had previously held a lot of power over Shinji, Shinji replies only with “that is my intent” (to never see you again). It really shows how he isn’t conflicted in his feelings towards his father any longer, and the guilt he had carried over Gendo leaving him is gone. The revelation that Shinji’s school is essentially just a farm for EVA pilot candidates is so disturbing. Asuka’s ego is really dependent on her EVA piloting, she hasn’t taken her defeats very well and you can tell her confidence is shaken, and then shattered after the Angel defeats her. Kaji has another really touching speech to Shinji, and finally reveals the goal of the Angels: to reach Adam in terminal dogma and trigger third impact. Rei is a girl of few words, but when she does speak boy are her lines heavy “even if I die I can be replaced” wow. Shinji’s return is such and amazing sequence, we’ve never seen him so fired up and determined to protect those who he cares about, regardless of his father. Very creepy feral unit 01 and some ominous exposition from Akagi plus a massive cliffhanger, what and episode! Also, the second title of this episode is another psychology term. Introjection is the incorporation of characteristics of another person into one’s own psyche unconsciously. This occurs naturally as a child grows up, often adopting the attitudes and values of their parents, but it can also be a kind of defence mechanism in commonly observed in children with unavailable parents. By unconsciously absorbing the characteristics of the absent parents, children reassure themselves that some aspect of the parent is present even if the parent is physically absent. This really applies to Shinji as his mother is dead and his father is extremely distant, and you can see an example of Shinji using introjection as a defence during the earlier episodes chanting “i must not run away” when we know how Gendo uses the phrase “running away” to hurt Shinji. I’m so excited for next week! Great discussion as always!

No, he really does NOT care, does he? It's insane that he just STOOD THERE without moving during that fight; I think Rei did the same too in a previous episode; y'all need to consider your well-being! @_@ And YES! Anthony, a Patron on here that has given me all the videos, told me they were Director's cuts for everything. :) So we should be good! Thank you so much for the kind words and comment! :D

Romaniablack

what a great episode and reaction! one thing I always found odd was the way Gendo does not care about his own safety at all…like we get it, you’re mentally ill and nihilistic and everything, but shouldn’t you be more careful as a head of an organization that tries to literally save the world? Anyways, I don’t know what version you have, but would you please react to directors cut (episodes 21 and up) instead of the TV version? I promise you you won’t regret it :)

Zora_Nov

That is HILARIOUS! I've had Kill la Kill on my "list to get to" one of these days, so that's funny!

Romaniablack

If I remember correctly I think Kill la Kill poked fun at the whole concept of 'no mouth flaps = corner cutting' by having a character that had his mouth covered all the time except when he's speaking.

Alex Kornejo

I think it could go either way; either a stylistic choice or them cutting a corner to shave some funds...or both? :P It's an interesting choice, either way.

Romaniablack

I thought it was a weird change but with this show...I'm assuming little is done for no reason, so...creeeeeepy, right?!

Romaniablack

Can you believe this is the first time watching this scene (and I've seen it at least 10 times) that I noticed (thanks to you) that the Eva didn't have it's armor mouth like it does when it goes "berserk" at the beginning of the series but has human teeth. I don't know how I missed that!

Anna Kyruin

This entirely depends on the quality of the animation. There's a few anime where speech is animated on the ones and that is pretty intense :D Also anywhere you can shave time for the animators and editors makes room for other work (like the awakening scene in this episode) which is why it is entirely not uncommon to use every shortcut you can without compromising quality. Eva is a master class in this, I doubt it wasn't a consideration when covering mouths. It has a stylistic impact as well, but it is at least one fewer frames to draw. The history of the style of anime is heavily influenced by the need to find every possible shortcut in animation to make a budget. Even when it isn't necessary for budget a lot of studios do it out of habit/tradition now. Sorry if this sounded soapboxy! Totally not my intent, I'm just an animation nerd.

Anna Kyruin

Y'all have no idea how much I appreciate your understanding! :)

Romaniablack

No problem, making things clear is never a bad thing!

Simon Lemon

That's okay! I feel awful telling people not to spoil on; I'm going to put a spoiler post out later today (not directed towards anyone in particular, just so everyone knows my thoughts on spoilers) so hopefully that helps! I NEVER want to make anyone feel like they can't or shouldn't comment on a video.

Romaniablack

Cool! I can see the FLCL influence!! That'll be neat to see on the Rebuild movies with him back!

Romaniablack

That's really cool -- it's a shame her apartment seems so bare bones; the design is interesting.

Romaniablack

Ah, okay. Sorry, didn't know that counted as a spoiler! It's just something i recently noticed.

Simon Lemon

That's true; I was just positing it as a theory. :)

Romaniablack

Oh.....okay. Thanks for letting me know, but please, if I missed something, please don't mention it until the end of the series or livestream. I'm doing my best to not be spoiled by ANYTHING and I want to keep answering and reading comments. I know it's not a big thing, but I don't want to open the doors for people to start telling me things that end up being spoilers. I hope that makes sense!

Romaniablack

Thank you for mentioning that; I'll make note because in the discussion, I hadn't made that connection. I do ask that if I miss something in the discussion from the episode, to please not mention it until the end when we do the livestream. I like figuring things out as I go, and I don't want someone accidentally revealing something that will spoil a surprise for later on, even if they're trying to help. I'm not saying you did that, of course, but I wanted to note it here, because it's happened with other series in the past and I'm trying my hardest to avoid it! I hope I make sense! :) :) Thank you so much for the comment!!

Romaniablack

You missed a detail! Toji has lost one of his legs, look again and you'll see it in the hospital scene.

Simon Lemon

Not animating lip flaps would not save on either time or money. It's such a basic thing to animate that it most certainly is a stylistic choice whenever the mouth is covered or doesn't move.

Simon Lemon

Thank you for the information; however, if it's not something we've been told yet in the episode, I consider it a spoiler and do not want to know that information!

Romaniablack

The Evas don’t have S2 engines naturally. That’s why Unit 1 ate the angel, thus absorbing its engine into itself, or herself. Without spoiling anything, I’ll just say we don’t know the exact origin of the angels, but they were not manmade.

Fun fact: The Co-writer of this episode: Akio Satsukawa is also the designer of Rei's apartment. he based it on a real-life apartment he had seen while working part-time as a plumber.

Simon Lemon

Masayuki Yamaguchi did episode directing on this episode. He's a Gainax guy, he previously directed an episode on Nadia: Secret of Blue Water (Anno's previous show). After EVA he worked on FLCL, Diebuster and Gurren-Lagann in the animation department. Besides directing this episode he worked on animation and on storyboards on EVA. He was also co-director on 3 of the rebuild movies.
