In all seriousness, though, this episode gave us adorable parental moments with WuXian -- and a very reluctant Wangji, whom I fangirled over this episode -- cinnamon roll feral zombie Ning, and the clock is ticking for Wuxian, who is consumed by the curse he lifted from Ling? Things are not looking good for our chaotic gremlin, as we unearth more of his dark path leading towards his inevitable death...This show, y'all!

I'm so glad there's more flower symbolism discussed here; that is awesome! Thank you for the extra information! I think that speaks to Cheng's character in that even though he constantly compares himself to WuXian...he shouldn't, because as his family's flower suggests, he can still become just as great eventually. 3 Ahhhh, and that part about WuXian is sooo good! He may be a foster child of the family, but he embodies its spirit so much! I love that.

2021-05-11 12:26:42 +0000 UTCI was inspired by Anastasia -'s fantastic comment on the flowers, I want to add that in Chinese culture lotus flower is primarily connected with Buddhism. An important Buddhist sutra, Sad-dharma Puṇḍárīka Sūtra (usually translated in English as The Lotus Sutra), has become very influential in China since the fifth century. Basically the sutra is using lotus flower as a metaphor for the purity of Buddhist teaching, since lotus flowers grow out of muddy environment yet the blossoms remain as pure. It also reflects the Mahayana Buddhism belief that every sentient being is innately endowed with Buddhahood (ultimate enlightenment), but since we are trapped in this chaotic, unclean secular world, we tend to forget our purity and true self. But everybody is able to and eventually will attain Buddhahood. Wei WuXian is for sure trapped in ugly power struggles between the clans, which has caused him and will continue to cause him great trouble. He is also seen by other people as the formidable and vicious "heretic cultivator". But he has never forgotten or betrayed his own principles once. He is the pure lotus flower that grows out of this muddy world, and who once said that he is the one who "truly understands the spirit of the Jiang clan"?

2021-05-11 06:03:59 +0000 UTCThis was a great post and spoke a lot to my thoughts on WuXian and the new "found family" he has with the remaining Wen's and in Yiling; I wish I'd talked more about it this episode. Ahhh, and thank you for the suggestion about the book -- I really can't tell you how excited I am to dig into the novel and audio drama this summer, while we wait for Season 3! :) I love the flower symbolism that you point out, especially with the Lotus! And of COURSE Cheng immediately thinks that WuXian is naming Baby Ling after Wangji's clan. :3 I love how WuXian is so oblivious to it all but everyone else around them knows that they're basically a couple, hahaha! Thank you for this awesome comment! There's so much to think about going into the last two episodes, and then diving into everything else MDZS-related! :D

Yessss, the title of this episode tying back to Wangji's talk with WuXian, too. OHHH, okay, that makes much more sense that it was a year after the wedding and after Baby Ling was born! It's so heartbreaking! T_T not at all how I anticipated it going down...but now I'm nervous for Yanli.......this is going to hurt, isn't it? @_@

Honestly, it was priceless even as short as they made it in donghua. Obviously a lot more family and gay dad feels in the book and in live action. And seeing Wei Ying in Yiling, with peple not noticing him at all, not running away in fear - it's a message as well. If only anyone was eager to listen what those people have to say about Yiling Patriarch. He himself... well, it's over a year, him living with Wens. About 2-3 years if you try to recreate a timeline. It's another found family for him. Chosen family. Peaceful and free from clan matters, but still very much in ominous atmosphere. You know, some people, after watching and reading, still stubbornly deny that Wuxian feels it. The inevitable end, his own frail control. They say he was just happy to run away and play toys with new friends, totally unaware and uncaring, leaving Jiang clan to the wolves. Well, they are wrong. Even here, when he tries to say "my shije" and yet corrects himself, it's him protecting the clan. It's him knowing his dark arts can end poorly and both his families need protection from him losing control and sullying his reputation even further. Of course, a brave face is ever needed, especially in front of Wangji. But the little slips. The scraps of phrases and glances tell us he knows. The end can't be far. It just doesn't change his choices. Wen Yuan and other future-related questions could lead to me saying "try rewatching certain episodes" but I won't. Since you're reading the book after, I believe it's best to relive these questions and answers, all suspicions and heart-breaking revelations while reading, in the order that the book meant. Another cute piece of trivia: Jiang Cheng accusing Wei Ying of thinking of Wangji when naming the future kid is not all unfounded of course, but still the connection exists! There's a lot of homophones in Chinese language, these two "Lan" are written differently... but the study room in Lan clan residence is actually called "lanshi" with that same meaning, "the Orchid Room". That refers to an old Confucianist saying, that a gentleman (a good cultured man) stays proud and strong and different from the crowd, like an orchid is among other flowers. So, both Lan clan and Wei Ying wish their charges will grow up adhering to this saying, as perfect gentlemen. Another flower-related saying refers to Jiang clan lotus. The lotus is also revered among flowers since it grows from the mud yet is stunningly beautiful and gives food as well. So, even the seemingly bad circumstances can birth a man or a clan that can be great.

2021-05-10 20:13:41 +0000 UTCPoor LWJ had no idea how to handle Wen Yuan. And I love the quiet moments between LWJ and WWX. And the talk about Paths and what is right and what is wrong, is such a theme in this story. I believe that when WWX goes to meet Jin Zixuan it was a year after the wedding and was a banquet for Jin Ling (Rulan). The Uncle, Jin Zixun set an ambush for WWX, which was unknown to Jin Zixuan. The ambush was to confront WWX about the curse. And yes, WWX went out of control and when Zixuan approached him, WWX felt threatened by Zixuan so Wen Ning attacked.

2021-05-10 17:44:05 +0000 UTCI think the flute that Lan Zhan picked up in the earlier episode was the flute that WuXian was using when they rescued Jin Ling out of the creepy domed thing. Remember Jiang Cheng caught WuXian off guard when he was trying to transfer the curse from Ling to himself outside? Likely the flute was left there then.
