Mo Dao Zu Shi: Audio Drama, Manhua, & Novel Review - Part Seventeen! THE WANGXIAN THEME INTRODUCED!

I won't lie; I've been waiting for this set of chapters since I started the novel! And hearing our VA for Wangji hum and lead into that beautiful duet? **chef's kiss** SO GOOD!

These were a sweet set of chapters; WuXian, my dude -- could you be more oblivious to the "turmoil" you are leading our Lan Zhan through? Hahaha, at least we know he's STARTING to get it in the present! Now...next up is Lotus Pier, right? **nervous chuckle** No worries, eh?

Thank you for listening with me and for all the support!

I never thought I was read about Lan Zhan being SO WOUND UP and (sexually??) frustrated to the point of literally BITING WWX, but herrrrrre we are! And interesting about the betrothal ritual! Hm. And yessss, the fact that WuXian STILL cares for him despite anything else...it's love dammit! And yessss, the Lotus Pier...one final time, eh? T_T I've handled it in the donghua and The Untamed...surely the novel won't be any sadder? *nervous chuckle* I do love that despite the BL tropes like you mentioned, we get a canon, happy ending with WuXian and Wangji -- I'm so ready to get into the latter chapters! :) :) Thanks for the comment!!

Dat chomp! Imagine how tightly is Lan Zhan wound up at the moment, and Wei Ying keeps unknowingly teasing him, ramping up that pressure. Lan Zhan can't touch him as he wants, can't push him away, can't afford himself anything except for a few frustrated words and a nice bite of that arm XD Also, I've only recently learned "biting an arm" is some kind of a metaphor connected to betrothal rituals... a pretty far-fetched connection but still a nice reference. And whatever he does, Wei Ying can't stop caring about him. That's probably the first time Wangji also realises Wei Ying is not a shallow person at all when there are lives at stake. I myself like to imagine it was the moment he finally admits to himself that he is in love. Not the helpless unknowing lust that locks up your heart and rages inside, not the sweet and simple puppy liking, but real, grown love and admiration. Them trying to smalltalk is too cute. Why did you ask what time he sleeps, Lan Zhan? Are you already planning your evenings together, maybe? The official AMV was too good. Too good! All those animations, flashes of color that happen when they touch again (talk about all the soulmates tropes!). And Wangji's voice, oh. It's so often only in the character songs we come to deeper thoughts and feelings of cold and closed characters, and their seiyuus do such an amazing job with it, like Okiayu Ryoutarou tends to do. Yeeah Lotus Pier is ahead of us again... this will be one long flashback, thankfully not to the end of the past story. I actually love those few fanfics that make friends out of Wangji and Mianmian. She deserves it, and he deserves a friend he can be out and open with. And compulsive heterosexuality is also a tag on AO3 because of Wei Ying probs XD Yesss that's so great they ARE going to be happy, and together, and freaking canon! After all the fandoms where my ships are mostly generic and popular but still so very not guaranteed and problem-riddled, like Soukoku - it's an honest to god new world when you get canon gays. Happy and living and loving and resolving their issues and not bashed by society for being gays! Japanese yaoi scene wasn't very happy for characters for many years also, so many movies were either of school sweethearts parting or two drug addicts ending up dead, uh. WangXian are the epitome of happy end for me, still.

Yesss, I love that the outro is now the WangXian theme! :) That duet is GORGEOUS -- Wangji's singing voice is *chef's kiss* Oooohhhhhhhhh, and the "you're the worst" line makes sooooooo much more sense! I was like, "Wangji, why you dissing WuXian in the moment??" but this makes much, much more sense! Thank you for pointing that out! That helps a lot! And it just seemed so out of character for WuXian to be THAT outwardly mad...I feel bad for our boys! T-T

Yes, it is the name of Wangji's sword used in that line of the lyrics. In this WangXian lyrics, they actually managed to smartly weave in all the weapon names wielded by our duo into the lyrics. WuXian's Suibian, flute Chenqing, Wangji's zither Wangji, and the sword Bichen.

We're finally at the WangXian theme in the audio drama! This is arguably my favorite WangXian theme of all three adaptations. The duet is just amazing! Yes, Captain Xichen has to invite Mianmian to board his WangXian ship. Poor girl Mianmian has no clue what she has done to our innocent boys lmao. The phrase Wangji said to Wuxian in the cave is "You're really taoyan!" The word "taoyan" always gets translated literally to something like detestable in English, but it's a bit off. Actually Chinese couples always use this word to describe each other because it's implied that I care about you so much and whatever you do always pluck my heartstrings and I don't know what to do now. It's more similar to saying "You're the worst" in a flirtatious and jokingly way. That point about Wuxian cursing because he's under the influence of resentful energy is SOOOO good! I've never thought about that before but it makes TOTAL sense.

Name of the swords really often show the deepest feelings of the character. "hensheng" or to detest//hate/regret life in Meng Yao's case, infamous "whatever" or "suibian" in Wei Wuxian's reflecting his nature although he chose it on accident... Have you noticed that in the wangxian song in the line "How can I avoid this desire/feelings" (translations differ) it sounds like the word (maybe it's the same word I dont know chinese) "bi chen" which is the name of Wangji's sword meaning "to avoid wordly matters" . He is litetally saying he is going against what he considered a continuation of himself for his love imo
