 *DUELING HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Oh, this show has so much mystery and I'm sooo excited about it! There are parallels, there is some interesting "developments" and some crazy animation -- all I can say is: When that organ music and/or creepy choir chimes in -- it's a sign something EPIC and WILD is about to happen! And I'm here for it!

“The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Who would be born must first destroy a world." That's such a quote. Sounds so empowering but thinking about a certain other story it can also create such a corrupted mindset. Ikuhara's friend recommending a book that 'has everything about me' but later forgetting is so funny to me because a similar thing happened. Back in late HS early College, my gf at the time recommended a story that she liked by Yukio Mishima. It wasn't one of his big works so I couldn't find it neither in my university's library nor on the bookstores I went to, even online there wasn't much info on it at the time, so eventually after some time when I was able to visit her I brought it up hoping she'd give me a heads up on where she found it or if she could lent it to me but it turns out she didn't remember the author I was talking about. I've read summaries but to this day I still haven't gotten my hands on it, I probably should. Back to Utena, Maybe that situation Ikuhara relates ties to Wakaba's book, she read "Magnolia Waltz" before and didn't like it because she couldn't relate because she had ideas of a first true love and ending up with a second guy was 'lame' as she put it. But now that she's been rejected and publicly mocked, a story of new love after a failed one is something she can identify. Maybe people forget about books they've found so important at one point in their lives because they've helped them on a particular moment in their lives but once they move on they also move on from that book. Still, not remembering a book you recommended to somebody is still odd. hahaha.

I love the character of Anthy, and I can't wait to hear your thoughts about her as the series progresses. Since she has such a calm personality and she is established in the beginning to have little autonomy because she has to obey whoever wins the duels, many people see her character as boring or lacking. But I find it so interesting when we see glimpses of her (like when she smiles at the end of the episode). She is such a mystery hidden in plain sight.

Here's Ikuhara's episode commentary for this one: “The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Who would be born must first destroy a world. The bird flies to God. That God’s name is Abraxas.” – Hermann Hesse, Demian (translated from the German by Michael Roloff and Michael Lebeck) When I was in middle school, my classmate T. recommended to me a book by Hesse. He said “Inside this book is everything about me.” I didn’t know what he was on about. However, that particular quote stuck with me. One day long afterwards, T. and I met up again after not seeing each other for over a decade, and I brought it up. “What was that, again?” He didn’t even remember the book existed, let alone that he’d recommended it to me. To think he’d just forget “everything about himself”… I wonder if Hesse wasn’t needed in the world T. lived in after middle school. In which case, I wonder why I didn’t forget. I experimentally added another passage to Hesse’s: If we don’t crack the world’s shell, we will die without being born. Smash the world’s shell. For the revolution of the world. Assistant director Kaneko and I discussed Anthy’s character time and again because I was obsessed with the idea that whether or not it was “good”, nobody would want to watch a dark and depressing show. That cooking smock over gym clothes look was the result of our conversations. And she finally turned fun… no, she turned into a mysterious girl (!). Anthy is another Utena. In the initial stages of planning, I thought of the main character as someone who wanted to be a prince, but at the same time also wanted to remain a princess. However, I decided to divide that personality into two different characters. What did “also wanting to remain a princess” mean? I would agonize over the expression of Anthy for the entire series.
