A short video about VCIs

VCI stands for Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor.  It's basically a system where a molecular layer of oil is deposited on every item in an enclosure to shield them from moisture and oxygen.

You've probably already come across them without realising exactly what they are.

Interesting eBay find

This video also includes a psychological test to see if people do react to thinking they have been exposed to UVC via their computer monitor or phone.  Most of them won't read the description!

Quite a nice lamp, with the packaging adding a very vintage feel.

And another - scam

These have been around for so long.  I think most of these antenna scams originated in western countries and have been cloned to death by China.

This one doesn't even make an attempt to be convincing.

Baluns. I got this one wrong....

I was expecting these devices to be galvanic isolators as well as impedance matchers, but I was wrong.

These are VERY useful devices that allow the transmission of video and power from a camera to a monitor or recording device, using plain CAT5 style network cable.

That saves cash, ca...

Hacking a newer version of the LIDL soldering iron

I got this unit a while ago, but as I'd put out a couple of other videos on the same subject I felt I should do this one later.

It turns out that it also has the temperature fixed at a very high level like the others, but this time it takes a resistor mod in the handle to tame it down. &nbs...

Unusually safe Chinese eBay lights

I was almost hoping this power supply was going to be terrible inside, but it actually seems to be made to local safety standards.

It took a while to reverse engineer the primary side circuitry, because the chip isn't one I recognise and I didn't get any clues from the number on the IC. &nb...

Random kitty-ozone gadget

I bought this during the pandemic, but didn't make a video about it because I felt that I had made too many ozone videos at that time.

It's an odd device that detects movement and then when the movement has finished it emits a small amount of ozone and other active air molecules into the su...

Deja Vu with meter two

Having recently featured an identical looking module (with different circuitry) I felt the need to make a strikingly different thumbnail, as previous experience has shown that similar thumbnails and items makes people think they've already seen the video.

Exploring a digital panel meter

This is one of two very similar meters I bought from eBay, that both have slightly different circuitry.

The other meter will be explored in a different video.

It's reasonably functional meter, and is calibratable with a tiny potentiometer.  (using an insulated tool)

Mystery urinal-shaped insect trap

A random eBay find last year when I was going through an insect-trap phase.  This one has a very large and good quality case with a better than average set of LED illuminated strips with deep violet LEDs nudging closer to the UVA spectrum.

I like the way the play button in the thumbna...

I've released the Bored Ape UVC video early

It's rare that I release a video so quickly after making it, but in this instance it is "in the moment" and I also want to address a lot of misinformation on other videos where they are wrongly blaming other lights for causing the eye damage.

I also want to put the minds of the people affec...

This video will be jumping the queue

Thanks to everyone who alerted me to this incident.

By analysing online images I think I've found the cause, and want to assure the people affected that despite the huge discomfort caused, they will not suffer permanent eye damage as a result of being at the event.

It's bizarre that b...

Lets see if YouTube understands double entendre yet

A look at a very common product on eBay at the moment.  The price range for these seems to have extremes for what looks like the same product.  This one was cheap!

The control module is actually water-resilient and quite a functional little thing, with other uses.

The heater...

The power input is on the left and the output is on the right.

Interesting twisted LED light

The best thing about reverse engineering this light was making sense of how a little extra dynamic current regulator allows lights like this to be dimmed, while using simple circuitry and standard existing components.

I reckon it is effectively rationing the charge to the main smoothing cap...

Opening the lithium cell

A look inside the capacitor-can style cell.

I'm wondering if the can has as good a seal for the very volatile electrolyte as the pouch version has.

Lithium cell in an electrolytic can

I guess this is what you do when you are mass producing a product in such high volumes that you want to remove a lot of the manual labour from the process and have a machine banging these out continuously.

I'm not sure if we'll see any major advantage to a cell packaged in this way, but it'...
